Leaking Transmission (formerly Stupid Question...)

Does Tranny fluid smell the same as motor oil when it burns? I have a leak that drips on the catalytic converter and it smells like oil burning. I had thought it was oil, but I can't find a leak anywhere, especially high enough on the motor where it could make it all the way to the back of the tranny to drip on the cat. So I figure it has to be a leak in the transmission somewhere, but I've never smelled trans fluid cook so I thought I'd check.

BTW it's rather dirty under there so I haven't really been able to determine the color of the fluid that drips on my garage floor... and my hose is frozen so I can't wash/degrease it at the moment.

That's not a stupid question. I don't think I've been able to determine the difference between burning engine oil and burning tranny fluid by smell. They're both really nasty. Also, if your leak puts enough oil on your converter, other drivers will give you a lot of room. For some reason, the smoke billowing out from under your car seems to scare them. lol.

If there is fluid on the garage floor, use a white paper towel to blot some up. You should be able to see a pinkish hue around the edges of what the paper towel absorbs if it's trans fluid.

If its oil it could be a plug that's on the back of the head I believe..or maybe the block...not sure. But I asked here and apparently there's one somewhere on the back of the motor

There is an oil galley plug in the back of the head.

Yeah I checked all that. It's leaked with 2 different heads on it too. The head itself is dry all the way around. I originally thought it was leaking from the connection at the head for the turbo oil feed line because I saw a drop of oil hanging from it when I was checking over things, but I have since replaced the line with Stingers braided line and it's definitely not leaking now.

Alright... It's definitely tranny fluid leaking. Is there somewhere high up on the T-5 that can leak so that the fluid could both drip off the bell housing and onto the cat? I can't see any fluid inside the bell housing and it's definitely not leaking where the driveshaft goes in. I'm trying to avoid removing the transmission, but it looks like I may have to.
