Hey guys...

Me and one of my work buddies are planning a trip to the Vancouver and the Victoria area this summer (Last week in may). We've got plane tickets in hand so it's gonna happen. I was looking for advice from natives on things we've gotta do while we're there, and also recommendations for where to stay while we are there.

Can you help us out? [Image: smile.gif]

Later,

Hey man Aerobird Motorsports is right in Bellingham, WA! The motels here are hella cheaper than Vancouver and you can forget Victoria ($$$$$). Make sure you visit Point Roberts, WA. It's the place to see sunsets, very nice. Vancouver has a huge park that's nice and don't forget about Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

Are you flying into Vancouver, and then to Victoria? You know Victoria is an Island right?
I've taken the car ferry from Seattle up to Victoria and found decent rates at some of the hotels near the ferry terminal by the water, just a few block walk from the Glass Museum and historic Victoria. I went in the winter, so hotel rates were cheaper. But it's fun to rent a moped for like $40 US and tour the city.
Vancouver downtown, anywhere in the heart is a good night life. When I went the exchange rate was much more favorable than now, but you can still get around for a good price. Eat at a 5 star French restaurant for 3 star prices.

Actually, we're flying into Seattle, and then taking the Amtrak up to Vancouver. We were able to get tickets roundtrip from Huntsville, AL to SEA for $309, whereas flying straight into Vancouver was gonna be around $650(!). You can fly to Germany for that right now, which was our original plan, and then decided that the exchange rate would kill us (about $1.30 <-> 1 EUR right now). The Amtrak train runs $25 each way, so that was a no-brainer (and even though it's nearly a 4 hour train ride, we're not driving which is bonus...plus we've both always wanted to take a "real" train ride). From there we'll spend some time in Vancouver and the surrounding area doing outdoosy stuff before taking a ferry to the island, mainly for Victoria, but again we'll want to do a lot of outdoorsy type stuff as well.

We haven't made our accommodations for lodging yet, but I'm sure we'll be looking for cheap (but not too cheap) places to stay while we're there, plus I'm sure we'll want a car as well.

I'm not a native, but have spent a fair amount of time on Victoria for Business. I usually stay at the Laurel Point Inn right on the inner harbor. Its pricey, but right on the water. http://www.laurelpoint.com/

The only problem on the inner harbor are the sea planes taking off every morning. Its great to just walk around down there in the evenings.

There is also some better priced hotels the further you get from the inner harbor. Try Stay n Save or look up some of the chains. http://www.accentinns.com/

There are tons of resuraunts all around the inner harbor, and roughly one block over in a nice walking district. There is also a China town area worth checking out.

You wont want for outdoors things to do, although the weather may be a little wet that time of year. If you are into gardens and the like, they cant be beat.

I really enjoy my time up there.

That is a FABULOUS train ride. It goes right through some parks on the water near here. In fact if I know what train you are on, I can wave at you right on the side of the tracks when you are about 30 min north of seattle [Image: biggrin.gif] . I'm sure Michael is in ear shot as well.

For the out doorsy type stuff. I wish I had better advice. I think your best bet is to find their equivalent of a national parks and rec web site. When I was there we just took a drive around the island and checked it out. North of Vancouver, I think an hour, is Whistler ski area. Very famous and beautiful.

Bob is right about the wet. It's more grey, but it drizzles for days, with occasional heavy rain. Although we are having a very dry year, most of the ski runs south of the border are closed. Dunno maybe it'll rain a bunch when you get here. I don't think you will find a lack of out side places to go though. I didn't. I just don't remember where they were. We drove around until something looked nice.

Just look out the right side window when you pass through Bellingham, the yard with 4 TCs and a SHO is mine! Matt, you should come visit sometime! John Russell (turbocoupeturbo, the crazy guy from FL who owns 7 TC's) is visiting in 2 weeks.
