I was driving home after droping my friend off at work just minding my own buiseness and going with the flow of traffic when all of a sudden the blue lights are a flashin. well needless to say I got written a ticked for 44mph in a 25 zone "I was the only one driving slow enought for the damn cop to catch!" But I am an adult I made my bed and now I have to lie on it. This is my first ticket and I would like to keep it off the insurance "my parents will kill me." How do I go about handeling this I really dont wanna tell my parents unless i get charged or whatever? Any advice?

Which lane were you going with the flow in - left, middle or right? [Image: biggrin.gif] I never got a speeding ticket that I wasn't minding my own business at the time. And so was the police officer, bless his heart. I also never got one I didn't deserve. You already been charged if they wrote the ticket. Unless you know somebody in the system and know something they don't want the public to know
you got a problem. Read the ticket and see if you can pay by mail. This will not keep if off your record, only avoid a court appearance. you may have been going too far in excess of the speed limit to waive it by mail.

Come clean with the parents.. they will eventually find out, and then things will be WAY worse. When I was 17 (29 years ago...geech) I got a ticket for 50 in a 25 on my bike from the local PD. Since I had my bike insured in my own name, I figured I would just pay the fine, and the parents wouldnt be any the wiser. Well, a month or so later, my mother was reading the community newspaper, and it turns out they listed all the traffic tickets given out, and what the infraction was. Needless to say, I was in DEEP shit trouble with them for a LONG time.

Go to court and fight it. Usually, since you show up, they will lower the infraction. I had a ticket for running a red light last October, fought it, and I got the fine lowered to 50 bucks (down from 77) and I had to pay 30 in court fees, so I didn't make out money wise, but they removed the points.

A lot of people are telling me that they should just let me go to a driving school so i can sit through a 7 hour class so they will drop the charge. Hmmmm I have to be in court at 9:00am my parents are gonna know something is up when I am awake and dressed at 9:00 in the morning! [Image: smile.gif]

I think this is one of those instances where your parents may be upset at first, but then feel a sort of pride with you that you were honest enough to tell them you did somethign wrong. I'm 19 now and have only received one ticket (for "unlawful display of speed", ie i surpassed an old lady after a red light to merge in front of her), but I immediately told me mom about it. Not only did she commend me for being honest, but she came with me to traffic court and helped me get the ticket dropped.

I'm not sure about where you live, but here in Indiana, if you haven't had a "violation" in a while you are allowed a "freebie". They still make you pay for it, but it doesn't hit your record. When I got the two bogus tickets a while back under the new "agressive driving" enforcement shit here, I was able to write off one and then I was charged on the other, but didn't admit to it. Usually when you pay the ticket you are basically admitting fault..but you can also not admit fault but still pay....not that it makes any difference except for making you feel better. My two tickets ($120 each!) were for following too close (it was morning rush hour on the interstate through downtown...every body is following too close..duh) and unsafe lanechange (to avoid the bimbo on the cell phone, doing her makeup who about sideswiped me)...I wonder if she'd drive any better w/ that phone shoved up her A$%? But it was still my fault....I guess I'll get in lots of trouble avoiding all the idiots on the roads around here. I have about been nailed three times by women on cell phones in BIG SUV's running red lights......it's a car not a friggen phone booth!

OH sorry......venting

Anyway, read the ticket to see what your options are....

Get ready to start jumping through the hoops if yer gonna fit the ticket(3 to 4 visits to the courthouse)!! That's how they make money - it's a big hassle so most people just "pay and go on their way". Let me say, it's worth fighting(or at least pleading it down) reduced fine, usually reduced to "parking violation", if ya take drivers school, and the insurance doesn't "see" it as a moving violation- A BIG PLUS for kids! Out here if yer under 18 ya have to bring a parent or LG to court-and with moving violations ya have to go to court! Just to screw-up you and your parents day!!! Talk to the folks(I have 4 teens), the insurance will go through the roof on the 2nd MV, especially if ya hit someone!Oh yea, when I was a kid I used to wonder why the "old dudes" got to drive the cool cars? Cause we can afford the payments and our insurance is for 6 months for what you pay in 1 month! Bummer, dude

Definitely fight the ticket. Insurance companies use speeding tickets to bump us young drivers into a "high risk" category, which means they get a whole lot more money.

You're lucky it wasn't 45 in a 25 (or maybe the cop was being nice)--a lot of states use 20mph over as a threshold for making the penalty a whole lot worse, charging for reckless driving, etc.
