Hi all

I just got a quote from someone who will do the following to my 87 TC:

strip down all paint
fix all dents and dings
fix virtually non-existant quarter panel
remove all rust
DuPont paint of my choice
clearcoat of my choice
paint all doors, trunk, interior floor, body, hood, top of engine compt., etc.
repaint all trim
paint matching ground effects

...this for around $3000. Now, I'm a poor college student, but I have most of the money saved up. Any opinions on whether or not this is a good offer?

before i did al the body and paint work on my ca ri was quoted for 2000, plus dent repair just for a quicky respray, i ekean liek they dont paint teh door jams, or anything, just a real quick job, using sherwin williams paint, but this place hasa now a bad rep on theree paint work, so that allight.
but for 3000, thats not bad in my opinion, its actually kinda cheap if they are fixing a non existing quarter? so i gues that means badly damaged. so that cheap, trust me.

is this place I-CAR certidfied? do any insurance companies recommend them. do some investagating, and get another quote from another body shop, and shop around

As far as I can tell, I think I agree with BJL. (At least you're making progress B)

I was able to decipher "I-car" from his reply, and I absolutely agree with checking around, and verifying the shop's quality.

With everything you listed, 3k doesn't sound bad at all, to me. Just pick a really good color, and a high quality clear, and check up on the progress during the process to make sure everything's going smoothly.

This goes with the verification process, but make sure they use high quality CLEAN equipment, and a well-maintained booth. Doesn't matter how good the painter is if the shop and tools aren't up to par.

Not to bamboozle the thread, but SEE!
That's what I'm talking about- the most personally important line, and not one misspelling. Even with properly placed commas. [Image: biggrin.gif]

I will offer some advice as well, I am currently in the process of redoing the body work on a 83 Mustang and the amount of hours I have invested is well past the $3000.00 mark. So like anything else and especially with something as labor intensive as body work is, it will be expensive. Just for example the cost of the paint material to do a base coat clear coat was $320.00 and that does not even begin to get in to the other materials to prep the car. I would get several quotes and specifics as to how repairs are to be made including dent repair let alone the repair/replacement of the quarterpanel. You do not want to throw away your money just to have crappy repair work to start showing within a year or so. Just my opinion, so shop around to reputable places. Sean

I owned and operated a restoration business for 15 years, so, I have pleanty of experience concerning what you are asking about. $3000 is rediculously cheap for what you describe is going to be done. First, I would suspect that whoever gave you the quote doesn't know what they are doing. If that isn't the case, I would suspect that they aren't intending to do all they say they will, or, they aren't going to do a quality job of it. The materials alone to do a strip, etch, prime, surface, BC/CC job will run $700-$1000. That leaves you about $2000 for what sounds like approximately 200 hours of work. Something isn't making sense. I'm in an area where paint work is considered cheap and a BC/CC paint job on a clean car, no damage, no shooting the trunk, engine compartment, floors etc. runs approximately $2500-$3000. Be very careful of low ball bids.

$3000 does sound like a reasonable price for such a complicated and thorough job at a (hopefully) reputable shop, but the cheap Turboforder inside me tells me that that's an insane amount of money to spend on what amounts to a cosmetic enhancement for a $2000 car.

How bad is the current paintjob? And what's wrong with that quarter panel?

As a fellow college student myself, I just want you to make absolutely sure that you feel this is something that's worth $3000 to you. That much money doesn't come easy, and you may end up wishing you put it towards something else once the excitement of having a shinier car fades away. A fender bender or a shopping car can easily start pushing you back to square one.

I'm not sure how attached you are to your current car, but also keep in mind that the selling price of your car plus the money you have saved can buy you a VERY NICE condition, low mileage turbo coupe to start out from.

I agree with Hawk.... all that work, like removing rust, dent and quarter panel repair in VERY labor intensive. My TC was in pretty bad shape when I got it, rust, dents, etc, and it took me 2 years, and I dont know how many 100s of hours to get it ready for paint. The actual painting only took me a few days to do a 2 tone paint job. I dont have all the tools and skills of a professional body and paint man, so it took me way longer to prep the car than a pro would, but from what you describe, I can see at least 100 hours, maybe way more, just to prep the car or paint.
