Ok Matt and I have been working on getting the motor in the car today I have to go to work till 11pm so we are taking a break. We really need some tips as far as getting the motor back in. It is just hard to line it up with the tranny. How should we go about this? Any and all info you guys can provide would be great! I bet it is gonna be a pain to get that input shaft into the clutch but it would help if we could get the clutch in the bellhousing right.

Thanks guys

Since you asked for help from the really bad guys, and my wife has occasionally insinuated that my mechanical skills are really bad, here's my two cents worth of knowledge:

I did it on an old Subaru, a few different times, a long time ago, not a TC. At the time, I had an unlimited supply of tools at my disposal, including a hydraulic engine hoist and a couple of floor jacks. It was real easy, since I had the option at any given point of lowering the engine or raising the car. I had pulled the radiator but not the A/C condensor, and in THAT car, it gave me enough room to lower the engine, slide it over the shaft, and get all the bolts threaded (but not tightened). Occasionally, I had to press down on one end of the engine while raising or lowering the engine to get it to line up the way I wanted. After everything was aligned and threaded, I tightened the bolts.

I don't know if this is any help to you, or if it even transfers to the TC, since the Subaru engine is a horizontally opposed four-banger.

Hey Doc Whats Up! First did u have the clutch&pp off? If so u have to use a alignment tool to lineup the clutch(u probably know this) OK. Take a floor jack and lift the trans up but not so far that u put the trans at a larger angle than u can get the motor.U have to have the motor and the trans at the same angle K. With the drive shaft out put the trans in a gear that u can turn the tail shaft.(I have a yoke off different types of trans that I slip in the end to turn the shaft) Another tip I have used is to take 2 old bellhousing bolts and grind or cut the head off, then round them to use as a guide. Be sure to put them in the holes with the dowels(are the alienment dowels there?)Next get the trans and engine close the guide bolts will help get the clutch assembly somewhere lined up and put the 2 together. Only pain is to get the motor down enough to line the motor mounts at the same time as the bellhousing. Just take your time and it will go. Whatever u do don't force them together. Remember to put the steel plate on the engine first. Good Luck!!!
