Be sure and check the connector from the alternator wiring harness to the main harness near the starter solenoid and regulator. See my post on years of charging issues. The connector formed a high resistance load and prevented proper charging. I removed it and butt spliced the connections.

Just got the SnapOn D-Tac results..

Altenator has bad diodes in it..

at idle: 12.55 v and 8 amps
high rpm: 12.84 v and 32 amps

(and at high rpm the amps are all over the place, the tester just snagged 32 because that was the reading when it 'locked on' )

So, off to find an altenator~

Good luck on your electrical check but, I'll bet on the 20 year old alternator!

LOL~ Yep, Dan, you made the call.

Apparently the 7 year old battery is still at 87% holding power so that wasn't the issue at all.

I picked up a lifetime warranty Duralast rebuilt altenator for $58 and a pair of belts.. Now I've got something to do tomorrow (as if I don't have enough with a 2 year old and a newborn hahaha)

Thanks,

It stopped raining so I decided to tackle the altenator today..

Why do I love working on American cars??

20 minutes flat to change the altenator and belts..from hood up to hood down.
