A whole lotta smoke

My car has been running fine before this. When I drove the car this morning I heard a slight knocking type noise only between 2000 and 2500rpm. It finally started to stall out if I didnt give it gas and my PCV blew so I replaced that. I was able to get it to idle on its own and when I went for a test drive I filled my whole friggen neighborhood up with white smoke that was pouring from the tailpipe! It was also running and idleing pretty rough. What is this a sign of beside bad luck? It was running fine, the only thing I could think of is I got the emissions tested 2 days ago and maybe that has something to do with it?

If it's white smoke and the smoke smells sweet, it a head gasket or a cracked head
Did the knocking noise occur before or after the smoke started?

The knocking noise was before the smoke started. The smoke was even coming in from the vents on my dashboard. Ir was so bad that i thought the car was on fire.

that EXACTLY what mine did when i blew the head gasket on it. luckily the head wasnt cracked and there wasnt as much smoke as you are describing but the knocking and the white smoke sound EXACTLY like a blown head gasket. Do a compression test to find out. Also, if you can see if the white smoke smells sweet. If it does...your gonna nead a new head gasket. Have you run the car hard lately or just normal driving techniques??

I tend to run it on the hard side sometimes but generally I just drive it normal. I already started doing the headgasket job today but its my first time so its kinda taking me a little while to do. When I drained the coolant there was plenty of oil mixed in with it, so even if the smoking was caused by something else at least I know now the head gasket needs changing. Did the knocking go away after you replaced the gasket or am I stuck with it? thanks for the replies!
