Yet another cooling fan problem...

For the longest time (well, actually a year-that's how long I've had the car '88 bird) the pass side fan never worked. I repaired the motor and it ran fine. Last week, I converted to 134A (blows ice cold now!) but now the driver side fan keeps blowing even when I just turn the key to "run". It does this with A/C off. I unplugged the ECT and the fan still ran. It's not really hurting anything but more or less annoying hearing that thing run constantly. ECT checks good. H e l p!

Maybe the contacts for the relay for that fan welded shut. The fan relays are in the IRCM.

I had problems with the cooling fans from day one. Day two I wired them to a few fuses and switches that i put in the dash, no more over-heating or lack of fans [Image: smile.gif]

That is what I suspected Pete. I repaired the IRCM once for burned traces on the main fan CKT. I took it out again and tested the relay and it was more of a "thunk" than a "click". I smacked it a few times to no avail and put it back together so I could get to work. Suddenly it started working normal for the past couple days,so the contacts probably were stuck closed. I'm going to get new relays and replace them. I also found out a standard soldering iron doesn't get quite hot enough to do the job of replacing relays. Wound up using my 125 watt solder gun. I may do a nice write-up too. [Image: biggrin.gif]

Either the fan relay in the IRCM is froze shut, or the Pink wire at terminal 17 of the IRCM is shorted to ground, or the high side pressure switch is shorted, or, very unlikely, the EEC driver is bad.

With car on, and fan running, pull the 2 terminal connector off the high sode pressure switch (on freon hose near VAM). If fan stops running, check resistance of pressure switch. If it is zero oms, switch is bad.
