I replaced my rear brake rotors and pads Sunday. Other than the usual struggle with rusty bolts on the caliper mounting bracket, the biggest problem I had was getting the new pads to fit. They were 1~2 MM longer than the old ones, wouldn't fit with the anti rattle plates in place. I ended up filing the ends a little to get them to fit.
Screwing the caliper piston down the make room the new rotor and pads was real ordeal too, didn't have the right tool. Took a while but I got it done with some big channel lock pliers.
After putting it all back together, I took a test drive and so far the brakes are working fine.
There was a good amount of rust on the caliber pad bracket assembly's, and the rubber boots that protect the lubricated shafts that the pad bracket slides on are in bad shape.
I can't seem to find the replacement boots separately on line anywhere, so I will probably need to replace the whole caliper assembly in the near future. I have seen some aluminum rear caliber assemblies that fit the 1987-88 TC and early 1990's Mustang Cobras for sale for about $100 (loaded with pads). My question is, has anyone out there tried these? Are they a direct bolt on replacement or do they require some modifications? Are they worth the money?
