This is odd..I was leaving a red light..not running hard at all and I goofed and started in 3rd gear..i caught myself and put it in first just as the engine seem to almost die..it bogged down severely..at the next light when i was trying to accelerate she just started clanking and running like poop..i was 50 miles from home late at night so i elected to drive home any way..the next mornng i looked things over and I think that I jumped a tooth on the cam..I did the cam timing and now she wont start..i also noticed upon reinspection that the timing keep on getting out of specs..also noted was the fact that if I look at tha cam sprocket it looks like it has a wobble in it..it seems to spin oval and not round. Could my cam be bad? Please help...

Take the belt off. Examine the belt for missing teeth. If you find any missing th ebelt has to be replaced. While your at it see if you can move the cam from side to side and up and down. Any perceptible movement is bad news and indicates excessive wear in the cam bearings or cam bearing(s) are like Elvis and left the building.

When you say the timing keeps getting out of spec, I assume this is the cam belt being off a tooth. It's tricky to release the tensioner so that it puts tension on the belt without something (either the crank moves or the cam moves) moving out of postion. Sometimes you have to compensate by starting with whichever is moving being slightly out of position BEFORE you release the tesioner, so that when the tensioner is released it pulls things
into the proper position.

The cam timing HAS to be correct before you can deal with ignition timing.

If the cam timing is good, now make sure the dist rotor is pointed toward # plug terminal on the dist cap. This should get you into the ball park. Put a timing light on it and crank it to see where you are, move the dist to try and get 10* advance. See the picture, see the plug wire with white on it (#1) and the bolt on the intake manifold with white on it. This is the orientation you want once the timing is set to 10*. If the auxillary pulley and therefore the distributor got moved and you can't get things lined up as in the picture, you may have to pull the dist out and re drop it to move it a tooth.

I'll check but you shouldn't be able to move that cam more than a couple thousandths.

The cam sprocket should (must!) spin round.

The rotor pointing toward #1 only gets you into the ball park. It doesn't guarentee the car will start. Get a timing light on it and check it while you are cranking it, sprout out. Ths will let you see where you are and you can move the distributor more toward 10*.
