Won't Start unless I put some gas in the intake.

I have swapped a 1988 Turbo coupe engine and 5 speed into a 76 Mustang Cobra II.
It seams like it is not getting fuel while starting. If iI squirt some gas in the vacuum port it will start and run fine.
Any ideas?
I used the wiring harness from the 88, I wonder if there is a wire that I didn't get hooked up that provides power to the injectors while starting?
Thanks, John

Welcome

The injectors use the same power and signal for starting and running. Since it runs fine after it gets started, I would look for low fuel pressure caused by a weak fuel pump or clogged filter. Go over the Fuel System Diagnostics tech article found here: http://turbotbird.com/techinfo/Fuel_Syst...ostics.htm

Check the fuel pressure at the rail and post the results.

Welcome to NATO ..

ahem,
Generally we're not fond of projects swapping TC/XR7/SVO engines out of their proper homes...
but we understand there are 'too far gone' cars that need to donate.. so that others may live..

and it sounds like you have a cool project .. pix ?

after reading symptoms , my first guess is:
low voltage at fuel pump when cranking.

but follow the steps in that link from Zip ... Smile

I do have an '88 TC as my daily driver.
I tested the fuel pressure it was 40 lbs. When I turned the key on and about 35 when it was ideling. It still wouldn't start on it's own. I decided to check for power at the injector. I pulled the wires off the 1st injector and was trying to get my test light to light. Decided to try to crank it over with test light balencd on wires, well it stsrted. I shut it off and it started again. I have know idea why it started .

Are the injectors clogged. Have you checked cam timing, then ignition timing? Your fuel pressure is sufficient for starting.

I am thinking that there is a wiring problem near the distributor as I moved some of the wires down there and then it went back to not starting correctly. I am thinking of swapping distributors with the '88 TC some weekend and see if that fixes anything. It does have spark, is the crank position sensor built into the distributor?
Thanks,
John

There is no crank position sensor... there's no anything position sensor on these things.

I would check the ignition switch for one thing.

You try putting a NOID light on the injectors while cranking?

I finally got it figured out! It was a bad throttle position sensor. Apparently they are set up to cut off the injectors if the throttle is held wide open to clear a flooded engine. I unplugged it and it started right up.
Thank you for trying to help.

Glad you got it figured out, AND that it's an easy fix.
