wire insulation

Ok I need some wire insluation for the wires going from the TFI to the PIP on my remote TFI. I am using aluminum foil, somebody at work said it was a conductor and would make RFI and RMI worse, that true ? Well either way I feel like the car is not 100%, werid miss at idle and hard starts, directly after the mod. I went to Home depot, a radio store, aid auto, and radio shack and came home empty handed. Any suggestions on where online or any local stores that would have a good shield for the wires. Then I can finaly get my write up finished on this too, so that its is correct.

I've seen a few factory remote TFI birds and they all had the same black plastic stuff over the wires. The TFIs were mounted to the front of the upper radiator support. I did notice heavy corrosion of the remote mounts due to dissimilar metals and high water vapor content, so it might not be the best place for one. (Hence why I didn't buy it from the JY, I also haven't had any problems on the dozen TCs that I've had where it's at) Check your grounds, I get all sorts of strange stuff when a ground is "off". Hope this helps,

I just finished remote-mounting the TFI in my car and it runs and idles better than it ever did! Mounted it on the driver's side inner fender where the battery used to be.

On my remote TFI, I used a wire with the insulation stripped off and ran it with the three wires between the distributor and the TFI and grounded it on one of the TFI heat sink mounting bolts with an eyelet connector. Then I wrapped the PIP signal and bare ground wires (only) with aluminum foil. DO NOT ground either the bare wire or the foil shield at both ends as this will create a ground loop and cause all sorts of problems!

Where I extended the factory TFI connector to the remote TFI, I also included a bare ground wire spliced into the factory bare shield wire and extended the factory foil shield wrapped around the dark blue PIP, yellow spout, and the black ground wires with more foil. Do not wrap the two red wires or the green coil wire in the foil and do not gound the bare wire or the foil shield at the TFI end (they are already grounded at the EEC).

Hope this helps.

A metallic shield around the wires is a good idea, as long as the shield is grounded at only one location. The "grounded at only one location" part is IMPORTANT!!! Whoever told you that shielding would make RFI/EMI worse doesnt know what they are talking about.

For shielding, try Digikey, www.digikey.com

If you have access to any RG-58 coaxial cable you can carefully strip away the outside insulation and expose the shield. Then the braided shield can be stripped off the coax and used as your TFI shielding. Finally cover it with a long piece of heat shrink tubing. RG-58 should be available at Radio Shack.

Thanks for the replys [Image: biggrin.gif] I had a feeling he didn't know what he was talking about. Maby because the aluminum foil isn't grounded ? What would that get grounded to, the fender or something like that ?
O and while we are on grounds, I will need a ground for the O2 sensor when I swap turbos and know that the firewall is not a good spot from what I saw Jeff K post on TF. Where do you guys relocate them to ?

Thanks [Image: biggrin.gif]

I believe that the factory TFI harness had a foil type cove ron it,but it was grounded if I remember right. When I wrapped mine I just used high temp electrical tape and used the convoluted plastic wire cover that slips over the harness.

As I noted in my reply above, the factory TFI connector harness includes a bare ground wire (grounded at the EEC) ran with the dark blue PIP, yellow spout, and the black ground wires with a foil shield wrapped around all of them (the two red power wires and the green coil wire are NOT wrapped in the foil, this keep the noise in the power wires from interferring with the computer signals).

The foil shield is grounded because its in contact with the bare wire in the harness which is grounded at the EEC.

If you are replacing the shielding along the whole length of the cables go here: http://cableorganizer.com/metal-braided-sleeving/

If it is just a patch job go here: http://www.majr.com/HTML/shieldingtape.html ; I belive this is the same tape used from the factory. This web site also other EMI/RFI products at: http://www.majr.com/HTML/shielding.html

Hope this helps.
