Wiper switch kills engine?...

OK, I took the car out of storage yesterday, ran great, warmed her up, changed the oil, checked everything out good, took her for a quick ride. Everything was good with no issues, so I wash her all up thinking I would drive to work today. Go out this morning, car starts right up, idling, and as we had some heavy dew last night I went to turn on the wipers. On the first click, they did not work, which did not concern me as last year they did the same thing and by moving the switch on-off a few times it cleaned up and worked fine. This time, went to high on the switch, wipers came up about 2" and the engine dies. Ok, try to start back up, but nothing but cranking. Tried a few times, but it never fired, switched over to my other car and came into work. Any ideas on this one guys? Could it be effecting the ignition switch/wiring some how? Bad multi function switch? Figured I would ask here before going home tonight to trouble shoot. thanks

Hi Kuch, You mentioned that the engine cranks, but do the wipers still work?  Only need the ignition on for them to work.

Top of my list would be to check the ignition switch.

Thanks, I will check to see if the wipers still work with the engine not running. I did change the ignition switch about 2 years ago as the original was acting up like typical. Probably going to have to pull the column covers and check things over, pull the multi function switch and clean all the contacts.

In the quick 30 minutes I had free yesterday evening I went out and checked a few things, first, the wipers work on both accessory and in the run position, engine cranks over fine with the key. I hooked up my old scanner and did a KOEO scan and it only flashed a series of singles flashes, so that looks like a code 11 to me. Fuel pump kicks on and around the engine I can smell gasoline, so to me it is not firing the plugs. I have an old Accel coil on it now, but have an extra stock Ford one to try swapping it over tonight. Also going to have the wife watch the cam belt while I crank it to rule that out, but it is a new belt as of last fall. My gut is telling me it is the coil, we'll see tonight

Hook a test light between the coil positive and ground and see if the light turns on with the key in both start and run. If it doesnt, turn on in both positions, the ignition switch is likely bad.

The ignition switches on all 80s Fords are terrible. I seem to replace them every couple years on my 80s Tbirds every couple years. I even carry known good ones in the trunks of both Tbirds "just in case".

Quick update, I went out yesterday evening and swapped in an original FOMOCO coil, started right up. I guess the 25 year old Accel crapped out. Just glad it died in my driveway and not out on the road some where. I think the wiper switch was just a fluke in timing
