So it's been a while since I started a new post....and since everybody wants me to get my 88TC going again.... I know the first thing that has to be done.

Both my power windows are off the track and won't stay up. I'm sure I know why...it's those stupid plastic clips at the bottom of the windows that are broken.

Has anyone every come up with a good solution to this ? Like making your own out of aluminum and drilling holes thru the glass or something ?

I'd be interested in alternative ideas.

Hey, I have to start somewhere right ?!

Dan, I haven't take my doors apart to see how they are set in, but would this "how to" from a Lincoln be similar?

Town Car power windows

I'd stay away from drilling holes through glass. It's too easy to crack them. Sad

Oh, and if it's a plastic clip, check with the dorman or HELP repair section at NAPA or Autozone. There may be a clip that would work.

I don't think that there are any clips. Years ago one of my widows fell off the track and when I went to a glass shop to get some new clips they told me that my windows are glued into the track. The guy gave me a half tube of urithane for free and it worked great.

It's been awhile since I did one but I think Dan's problem is a little different than the Town Car fix. The TCs suffer from a tendency for the window glass to pull out of 2 plastic clips that are glued to the bottom edge of the window ("the clips" on an '88)

I've had reasonable good luck: I recommend cleaning all sliding parts and channels and re-greasing them. Also lube the window guides, front and back, that the glass slides up and down in. There is something longer lasting in silicon spray and somebody described it in a not to distant post. Non-lubricated glides put a lot of stress on the bonding of the clips

I have used a two part Epoxy from NAPA. The trick is to get some nasty gritty sand paper to rough up the glass on both sides where the clips will sit.
Apply the epoxy per it's instructions and run the window up about 98%. Running it up all the way, tight may cock the clips. I can't prove it helps but I try not to do that. I let them sit for 24 hours, minimum

Pete, Thanks for the additional info. As I have never seen TC door guts, it helps to know what to expect if I ever have this issue.

I should have been more clear about my glass clips....(no pun intended).

I think I can find an epoxy or adhesive to work. But my problem is the fact that the clips themselves break. I am not sure what type of plastic these are made from, but the plastic becomes so brittle that one or both of the sides just crumble and break off.

I've been tempted to try and fabricate my own clips, and didn't know if anyone had tried to make their own clips and, if so, what material did you use and was it successful ?

Dan, the basic part group # is 21410, for the window and clips. I'm sure it has something like E7**-21410-A. I sent the parts breakdown to Pete for the entire window assembly mechanism. I tried to Google it, with no luck.

I ended up using 3M Auto Glass Urethane Windshield Adhesive to glue my clips back onto the window, works like a charm. Just make sure that you clean and rough up the area on the window where the clip is gonna bond to, beforehand. A nice cleaning with Acetone or Reducer, rough it up with some 150-220 grit, clean again, and it should bond indefinitely. Mine have been fixed like this for over 1 1/2 years now, and show no signs of coming back off again.

Dan, if you need some OEM window clips, I can snag a couple for you the next time I'm at the yard.
