Where to get a distributor gear that actually fits

Fellers -
I've been without my 'bird for close to a month now. The only thing holding me up is sourcing a new distributor gear. I have purchased two of the "Standard" brand, part number "DG3" gears and they both are way too loose on the shaft. They should fit tight and have to be pressed on, but they just slide on with no resistance, putting all of the force of driving the dizzy and oil pump on that little roll pin.

Does ANYONE know of a different steel gear available? I have looked all over the place and I can only find bronze replacements other than the ill-fitting DG3. :headbang:

I am at a loss here, Brian...... Do you have a micrometer to mic up your shaft and compare to another 2.3 dist shaft?

I don't, Jeff, but I have tried the same two gears on two different distributor shafts with the same result on each. Both distributors had the original gears on them until a couple of weeks ago and both came out of TC's. I have a digital caliper around here somewhere, but so far I have only been able to find it' case. :dunno:

Brian,
I got one at NAPA, years ago and it was very tight putting it on the shaft. I had to hammer it on, so to speak, using some wood so
as not to damage the gear.

My guy at the place I usually get my parts checked with his buddy at NAPA and they carry the same one.

I found my caliper. The distributor shaft is perfect at .531 - right on the money. The ID of the replacement gear is .534. The ID of the original gear is .5305.

I rebuilt my dist last winter and the gear slid right on. Has been that way since I replaced the whole dist 40,000 miles ago.

Brian, maybe use the loose gear and cross drill the gear and shaft for a second roll pin to be sure it is securely held on.

I guess I'm going to have to use the new gear I have. I really don't want to use the bronze gear since it wears out so fast. Drilling for a second roll pin sounds like a good idea, Jeff. I really need to get this car back on the road ASAP!

Is there a certain type of oil that might let the bronze gear last longer??

Not really, but I am going to be using Valvoline VR1 oil now, which has a much higher zddp concentration. The bronze gears are designed to wear faster that the aux. shaft gear. "Self Sacrificing"... which is good, but in my opinion not so much for a purely street car.
