Hi,
I have been searching this board looking to find the best cam for my 88tc. Some say ranger, A237, ect. ect. In your opinions, what is the best cam. I need to replace mine and i am at a standstill in deciding...

Thanks

What are you looking for- that is, high speed, power, smooth idle, low end torque? (Pick one, not all.) I replaced my worn cam with the Sealed Power 767. That cam isn't going to impress anyone, but it works for me. It's cheap, (about $140 with followers and lifters,) idle is smooth, cold starts are easy, and the cam was easy to get from the local O'Reilly. My engine doesn't have a lot of high end, but that is probably due to other things as well, like a small vam, 17+ year old fuel pump, etc. It had less high end with the worn cam, so I know I am better off.

I just changed a cam in my car I put in a a solid cam with a little higher lift than stock but still mild, but I wish I would of put a roller cam in, it will give you a cooler running top end of the engine and start and run smoother, it won't have more power than you could with a solid cam but it will last alot longer than the solid cam

Mike is right that you need to decide what your goals for the car are in terms of cam selection. The stock cam can make good power if you blow on it. If you still have the IHI and plan to keep it, stay with a mild cam as the IHI just can't support a lot of cam.
The A237 is a fun cam, above 3K and you need an adjustable cam sprocket to get it alive that low. It's a little rough on idle and only pulls 16-17" vacuum. Once you hit 3K it's like turning on an afterburner.

I, too, have been in the market for a new cam ever since I've started to hear some absolutely atrocious sounds coming from under my valvecover. Considering that the new turbo doesn't spool up until around 3000rpm anyways, I'm looking for a cam that will give the most on the top end without entirely sacrificing low-end power (or having to idle at 1500rpm). I also need to be able to pass inspection with whatever cam I get. I've heard rumors that the A-237 may be tough to pass emissions with...is there any truth to this?

I've also read that the A-237 has too much valve-overlap for a turbo motor since it was originally designed for n/a use. I wonder if anybody makes a cam with similar lift / duration, but with events timed to best suit a turbocharged engine?

The Engle 111 might be a good choice for you. It is a slider cam. I'm even thinking about running it. The link has some discussion on this cam. You can always talk to turboalpine(Barry Deane ) for a cam recommendation. He is very helpful and really knows his stuff.

Does anyone know if American Motorsports is still in business. I just tried the link I had and it didn't work.

Has anybody got that cam or heard how it worked, other than the magazine article?

That looked like a nice cam on paper, RR timing events and approximately A237 lift

My goal is somewhat simple, I am not looking to make super HP but a nice compromise. I still have the IHI but i do want to convert to a t3/t4 hybrid. I am not worried about the smog nazi's beacuse they don;t do that in my area at the moment. I am curious about esslingers new roller that makes 65 more ft/lb torgue. It is 395 bucks though and it will fit in a stock iron head. Thanks for all the input.

Pete,

If you a thinking Automotorsport, click here

I have tried to follow up with this, and as far as I can tell, there were no "real" results beside what was done on Randy's car in the article. I wish they would dyno it on a decent ~280 to 300 HP combo, and post those results. I really dont think those results will show most of us anything as Randy's car is a pretty stout combo to begin with.

I have really been thinking of having a cam of these specs ground up, and giving it a try. $300.00 is to much for a cam unless they show me ~30 HP over the Ranger cam. I can get sliders ground just about any way I want for ~$150.00, and I can play around with the specs.

To the original question, I am going to put my Engle 55 copy in my "new" 88 and give it another try. This used to be the cam of choice before Joe Morgan started the whole Ranger Roller thing. My experiece with this cam was that it made the bottom end soft, but screamed right up to 6000 rpm, then tapered off. I could never advance or retard it enough to make it feel good on the bottom end.
