What To Do

Since I bought my TC about 7 years ago, I have been carrying the front license plate mount in my trunk. It has never been mounted on the car since the car was new. The dimples on the bumper cover where the holes are supposed to go are there and they have never been drilled out. It's the law in California that you're supposed to have a front license plate, but I don't know of an agency in the state that enforces that. I feel that if I drill out the holes and screw in the mount I will be mutilating my car. I'm inclined to leave it alone. Opinions?

Leave it alone! We have the same law in Ohio and I haven't had a license plate on any of my vehicles in the past 11 years.

A couple years ago I traded in my Mustang GT for a new truck; I never mounted the plate on the front of the GT and the dimples were still in tact. I saw it sitting on the dealer lot a week later with a license plate bracket mounted on the front...It made me sick!

We have the same law in Minnesota. I don't have a plate on the front of my F150, my wife doesn't have one on the front of her Mustang and my son doesn't have one on the front of his Turbo Coupe. I told my son as long as he behaves himself, the cops won't bother him. It's just like not wearing a seatbelt. Guess who has been the only one pulled over? He didn't get a ticket though, just a warning, and he still doesn't have a plate in front.

I've heard of some guys locally here getting tickets for no front license plate, mainly from city cops where they're using red light cameras to increase their city revenue (they DO NOT increase safety). That being said what I'd do if worried is to put the plate on the dash and prop it up, or stick it to the passenger sunvisor so it's visible in the down position.

Our cars look so much better without the gombie front license plate holder...

My TC hasn't had a front plate since new either. It sits in the passenger seat cubby. Nobody seems to notice on these cars because the nose is so pointy.

Joe, those red light cameras are a big thing in Long Beach, not so much in the Sheriff-patrolled areas around here. I'm down the 605 toward L.B. BTW, there's a spray you can get to cover your license plate that will reflect the flash when those cameras go off. All the camera sees is a bright reflection.

I keep my plate on the rear passenger side floor within reach. I agree, they look better without.

Due to the fact that i made anice opening in my bumper for the front mount, I am not going to have a front plate. My car will not be legal anyway, because I plan to tint all my windows dark. I may use a rear gas tank flip-style plate, so that it is down when the car is at a stop and flips up as the car is in motion due to the force of the air hitting it. Until then, it wont be there at all.
