I have a red wire that connects to one of the bolts on the inlet to the compressor housing. What is its purpose? Does everybody else have one too?

It should be orange, and it provides ground for the IRCM and O2 sensor if I remember correctly. DO NOT leave it unconnected. When I did, the car ran horribly.

As noted above, it is orange. While it does provide the O2 ground, it has nothing to do with the IRCM. It goes directly to pin 49 of the PCM (assuming my memory is working today). If broken or disconnected, the car will run pig rich.
