Well, ini the process of trying to top off my R-12 in the AC on the XR7 something has gone awry. I changed seals last year and added the 2 cans I had to the system. The AC worked, but cycled a bit much due to the low charge. Well the motor took a poop on the trip back, and some already know that story. Anyway, I got ahold of some more R12 and was going to top off the system for the trip. Well, I've got the stuff hooked up, and things appear to be fine (it wasn't going to take much more than 10-12oz anyway. Well, I have it running and such, then all of a sudden the compressor makes these two loud "fart" (for lack of a better descriptive term [Image: smile.gif] ) sounds and appears to vent out some refrigerant. I shut the AC and the car down and inspect and don't find anything out of the ordinary. I start the car back up and turn ono the AC, and now the compressor is knocking...It blows cold air, but most likely won't for very long..

That's just one more thing I didn't need right now. Oh, well, I guess it will be a hot trip to SC in a couple weeks.

Chuck, You have my sympathies. I've been to SC in the summer, no place to be without A/C.
I just talked to my brother who lives near Charleston. They are having a heat wave which means you need a machete to cut the air down there.

You're not kidding even where we are it is unbearable without AC. Wife called me this morning and told me the TC had no AC (she was a little more descriptive though! lol)...Bet you can guess where I'm going tomorrow with the TC!

Well, it can get pretty nasty in Indy too during July and August. We just had a hot snap here the past few days. I'll just have to wait to fix it, and most likely will just do the damn 134 conversion when I get around to it (maybe over the winter [Image: smile.gif] )I've got to deal w/ a divorce and house purchase right now, so I guess I'll suffer.
It blow cold and I'm half tempted to run it anyway until it locks up, and then just slice the belt off it and be on my way.....

Sounds to me like it might be overfilled with R12. Try venting a little out via the low side service port and see what happens... Screw the ozine layer and the EPA. Does the system have enough oil in it?

Jeff- Well I'm not sure about either. Like I said it didn't have a full charge anyway, and when I had everything hooked up I didn't see anything through the sightglass on the gauges, so I'm not sure if any freon actually went in. As for the oil, I don't know, and even if I did , where would I find R12 compatible oil? I might vent a little to see if that makes any difference

Chuck... Some oil leaks out when there is a R12 leak, so you are probably a little low on oil, but by how much? Who knows? Back in the good old days, you used to ba able to buy cans of 2 oz oil, 2 oz R12 at any parts store, but those days are long gone. I have an oil injector I got from JC Whitney, I think, that you open, fill with oil, close up, and force the oil into the system with some R12. Thats how I do it now. (I have a stockpile of R12 I bought before it was banned for private sale... probably the most valuable thing I own, hehe). An A/C shop might be able to sell you 500-525 viscosity refrigation oil.

An automotive A/C technician standing over my shoulder said that the system probably blew out oil when it (for lack of a better word,) farted. He suggests adding a couple of ounces of oil, and it may stop the knocking. He also said that compressors also knock when they are low on freon, but the cutout should prevent the system from running if the freon is that low.

Chuck.. one more thing to check... I agree that 99% of the time fast cycling is due to low R12 charge, but I did run across a situation a few years back when the fast cycling was caused by a bad clutch pressure switch (the one that sticks up out of the accumulator). Its on and off pressure set points had gotten real close together. Might want to check that also. I forget the on / off pressure specs, though.
