Here's the story so far...

Finally got the engine in, sensors hooked up, vac hoses going where they need to go etc... First time I attempted to start the car I got absolutely nothing. It would crank fine, but it wasn't trying to start at all. It was 4 in the morning by this point so I stopped working for the day.

Next day for s**ts and giggles I tried to start it again and this time it sounds like a single cylinder is firing. So that night I did some testing.

I confirmed all cylinders had spark. FP was 42 at the rail with the pump running and 38-39 right after shutting it off. After being off about an hour FP was still reading about 25 if I remember correctly. So at this point I'm thinking either the injectors are not firing at all or are clogged. I cranked the engine for about 10 seconds and then pulled the plugs and found that cylinders 1, 3, &4 were bone dry while cylinder 2 was definitely getting fuel. I realize I should have had them cleaned while I was building the motor, but I didn't so my best guess is that 3 were completely clogged. I switched them out with 3 different ones and then it would start up... briefly.

When I would crank it it started up right away every time. It would stay running (rough) for about 3 seconds and bog down and shut off. So I played with the timing a bit. I kept retarding it and every time it would run a little better. At this point I can get it stay running (though not smoothly at all) if I retard the timing to about 30-degrees btdc. While running I went to advance it back to 10 (spout disconnected) and it would bog and shut off at around 20-degrees btdc.

So that's where I am at now. The upper portion of the timing belt cover was broken off long ago so I initially used the string method of cam timing. When the belt is tight everything lines up perfectly. Only thing is I bought this engine already rebuilt from a guy off this board so I don't know exactly what was done to it when he got the machine work done. I'm thinking at this point that perhaps the cam could be off by a tooth or 2?? Any ideas or suggestions?

If you are having to move the timing that far off to keep it running, then it does sound like that your cam timing is off.

If it's starting and running, even rough for a few seconds, I'm thinking there is more than just a timing issue.

I'm not following you. 30*BTDC is way advanced, and cutting it back to 10* BTDC would be retarding it to a less advanced position.

Are you retarding timing to 30* After top dead center or advancing it to 30* before top dead center.

I agree that it should run well at 10 BTDC. I'm wondering if you have either an air/vacuum leak or something isn't plugged in. Is the VAM hose on right or the pcv not connected to the underside of the upper intake?

yeah I meant advanced... just got mixed up. It's 30 before tdc.

I have everything plugged in that I know of. the only thing that's not connected to anything is this plug that's attached to the inside of the right shock tower with a single green wire coming out of it and into the main bundle of wires on the passenger side. I have no idea what its for?? PCV hose is good. I'll have to check and make sure the VAM hose is on tight and there are no holes in it.

After all the crap I went through w/ the SVO, I'd still do a manual and physical check of all the timing stuff with your digits and eyeballs...

Well you hit it Pete. I probably would not have given that VAM hose another look if you had not brought it up. Apparently I hadn't tightened up the clamps enough or the bottom of the VAM side of the hose wasn't on all the way. Took it off, put it back on, tightened up the clamps and now it runs great.
