hi, i got an 88 turbocoupe i just bought with 85000 miles on it. I want to make the car a 13sec daily driven screamer, and be able to shift it at 7000rpm all day.If dont have to do the bottom end i wont, but i have a Very loud valvetrain noise,or piston slap, not a rod knock. My dad was a Performance engine builder all his life and says these Earlier 2.3 74-76 motors have piston problems which ford recalled, the rods didnt have holes for the oil to squirt on the skirts on early engines,i wonder if my car has the same problem, but in 77 they fixed the problem from the factory. my engine has good oil pressure, vac', and the turbo boost up fine and makes good power, just a Very loud engine, how are the cams in these motors? Could it be that? Anybody else have that problem? it is a 100% stock motor. What could else could it be? Just bought the car its got 85,000 miles, its an 88 TC, 5 speed.Owner said it has new timing belt in it also. If i do have to do the bottom end, whats the cheapest way to do it right? What pistons, and rods can survive at 7000rpm all day? thanks guys

First thing is does it sound like a loud clicking noise? If so it is probably the injectors, they are pretty loud on these ingines. Take a long screwdriver and put it tight on the end of the injector, while doing this hold your ear to the screw driver this will tell if its the injectors. Next chec the belt tensioner, when they get old they can make a very loud knocking sound.
I have a couple questions for you though. First is why do you want to rev the engine to 7000 rpm? I am running in the 13s and shifting a 5500-6000 rpm. I wouldnt worry about reving it that high. But if you are really set on reving it that high, pull your motor tear it apart clean everything, Check the bore for cylinder wear(my car has a 100,000 mile and had none), have the rods pulled off the pistons and have a set of crowers put on, Put fresh bearings and gaskets in. Have the large valve installed and port the crap out of the head, intake and exhaust manifold. You will need a larger cam something like an A-237 if you want to make any power at thie rpm. You will also need a much larger turbo than the little IHI, I would swap on an T4/t3 hybrid, you will also want ot install a full 3" exhaust from the turbo back and a LArge 190-255 pump. The last 2 mods would be the first ones to make. Just ask around and you will get all th answers to your questions well atleast most.
