I just brought a 1983 turbo coupe and it has a noticeable vlave tick, the valves are new but the clearances are off hence the tick. I'm going to be adjusting them myself so is it a pretty straightforward job? I can't find much info on the internet other than all data, and that's even pretty vague. Any help would be appreciated

There are no valve lash adjustments, assuming it has the stock hydraulic lash adjusters and hasnt been converted to a solid lash adjusters. Does it have the stock slider cam? If so, cam lobes may be worn. Pull the valve cover and have a look.

the whole car is stock so I would assume the cam is too, it only has 73,000 miles but I'll take a look when I get the car(Friday) and let you know what it looks like

Modern motor oils dont have the high pressure additives, like Zinc (which also degrades cat converters) to prevent wear on slider cams, as all modern engines have roller cams and dont require the high pressure additives. If the engine was run on modern oils, there is a good chance the cam lobes and followers are worn.

I found out the cam was replaced 2000 miles ago, if I do an oil change and add a zinc concentrate additive could the tick stop?

I seriously doubt adding a Zinc additive will clear up a tick. I would pull the cam cover and carefully inspect the valve train.

I have seen new slider cams severely damaged in under 2000 miles if no assembly lube was used during assembly and a high Zinc break in oil not used for the first few thousand miles.

Does the "tick" speed up and slow down as engine speed changes? (just want to make relatively sure it's speed related)

I've been pretty busy lately so I took it to a trusted shop and they said the top end rebuild that was done a few thousand miles ago was incorrect and it needs to be done again but they can't find any kits, does anyone know of a good rebuild kit as I can't find any either

Stinger sells lots of high quality engine parts for reasonable prices.

What EXACTLY is wrong? I WOULD NOT trust ANY shop or mechanic that did not provide EXACT and SPECIFIC details on what the problem is and the steps they will take to fix it. Will they guarantee their work? Do they have any experience with the 2.3 turbo engine or even the N/A 2.3? Not many shops do, as the last of these engines was produced nearly 30 years ago.
