Jeff/Keman,
The mechanic at a local shop I got transfered to for a few days did the same thing with the index mark, watched him do it and later on drive the car out. I worked there for about another week and the vehicle didn't come back.

Pete,
It looks like I'll be pulling this stupid tranny again. I'm contemplating just finding a Mustang tranny from the junk yard since I'm going through all the trouble. Mine makes lots of noise and I think the synchros are getting ready to let go.

Ryan if you can wait I will have a spare tranny probably beginning of july.

Pete picked one up for me thats in good shape and Im gonna get it from him at Carlisle. I need it so I can drop the one in the car back to bob hanlon for repair. and when the repaired one comes back I wont need it.

Brian,

I appreciate the offer but I'd rather not deal with shipping the transmission and all that jazz. I just want my car ready to drive to NY, the trip is in 2 weeks. Sad

OK guys, quick update. I got up off my you-know-what today and I tried a spare driveshaft. I double and tripple checked the pinion, there is ZERO movement either in/out or side/side. I threw in a spare driveshaft and noticed no improvement, so that narrowed it down to the tranny (ugh).

I pulled the trans today and since I have a spare, I took the one that was in the car apart. The output shaft bushing was worn wayyy into the brass area and even thinner in some places! I knocked out out and went to AutoZoo and picked one up with a new oil seal for $15. For future reference, NAPA lists the WRONG bushing in their computers! Get the one from AutoZoo, it is Timken brand which is what came with the transmission. It cost me roughly $15.

There is a slot in the output shaft that allows you to stick a screwdriver into so you can knock the bushing out. You do have to remove the shaft from the gearbox to replace this. I put the new bushing in using a can of Mother's Aluminum Polish. It was the only flat object I had laying around to hammer the bushing in.. LOL

Reassembly was pretty smooth, I had LOTS of trouble doing this last time (yes, this is the 2nd time I've had to replace this stupid bushing!). In the end, I only had to fire about 50 rounds of .357 magnum into the car to make everything work!

Anyway, the trans is back together now and I will let you guys know if it fixes the problem. Keep your fingers crossed!

Oh, they do make a tool so you don't have to remove the transmission to replace this bushing, however it costs nearly a hundred bucks. This method so far has cost me the bushing, a can of brake cleaner, a pack of razor blades, and a package of black RTV and a little bit of time R&Ring the trans!

Well guys, I got some quality time driving the bird tonight after I got her back together and everything is back to normal. The output shaft bushing was indeed the cause. I must say I did a rather good job because the transmission was leaking from just about every joint before I took it out. Now everything under the car is clean, painted, and all sealed up! Next up is the differential! Big Grin

Well guys, my vibration problem is still present. At 70 MPH or more, my entire car is vibrating/shaking. It all started when the vibration dampener broke off of my drive shaft. The local drive shaft shop said they can't get a new one and told me to grind the rubber off. I did and had them install new u-joints and re-balance the shaft.

They did install the new u-joints and it appears they at least attempted(?) to balance it because an old weight was knocked off of the shaft, but they didn't install any new ones.. is that normal?

I called them and asked if they could redo it and he said sure, so I'm thinking I might just go one step ahead of him and knock all the weights off, and replace the u-joints again myself and he'll be forced to re-balance the damn thing. I don't think he used high strength joints to be honest and I've seen them break at work before, and I have a 1,200 mile trip coming up next month.

The tail shaft seems to have a little bit of play in it so it looks like I'll be pulling my tranny again tomorrow and ripping it apart for a new tail shaft bushing and oil seal. UGH! I freakin HATE installing those! A local shop offered to do it for $70 and some change, but for another $45 I could just buy the damn tool and the parts and do it myself without pulling the tranny, so it looks like I'm doing it the hard (cheap) way. HOPEFULLY my vibration problems will be gone after I fix that.

On to the pinion. The pinion seems to be slowly leaking gear oil out of it. Is my differential near the end of it's life? There doesn't seem to be any play in the flange when I grab the drive shaft firmly and pull from side to side / up and down (that I can tell anyway).

Ryan, when you say the tailshft has play, do you mean the tailshaft in the tail housing, when the driveshaft is removed. I ask because I talked to the Ford mechanic that does the trans work at the local dealer. He said that shaft can be moved all over the place, it's normal.
Oh yeah, almost forgot about this too. After installing the new bushing and oil seal, the output shaft had VERY little play in it. When the driveshaft yoke was in, there was next to NO play! The guy was definately incorrect/letting worn out tailshafts and output shaft bearings leave his shop!

Excellent writeup Ryan. Glad to hear you got it fixed. You said this was the second time you had to replace the tailshaft bushing. Any idea exactly what is wearing them out?
