I pulled my VC eariler today and the gasket (still new) is split aroun' the grommets and the grommets and stuck in the VC holes. What would have been the cause of this? I can't reuse this gasket, right? This is the first time pulling it since install.

Well, crap. How much torque do they need? I will get a new VC gasket and torque it correctly this time.

Put the socket on an extension. turn it down until it just meets rsistance. Now hold the extension between your thumb and index finger. Turn it until snug, not tight. Do not use all the force you can muster. Think egg shells.

What caused it is that you didn't use the Ford v/c cover gasket.
Head to the nearest dealer and get the 95 Ranger 2.3 v/c gasket (p/n F57Z-6584-A). It has a full steel core around it perimeter and not those stupid grommets.
Next, pull the grommets out of the v/c.
Then install Ford gasket and reinstall v/c. I snug mine up with my std 3/8" ratchet...no more. I have reinstalled this particular one at least 5 times...
Be forever happy.

Ok, thanks. I just called the Ford dealership, they would have to order the gasket and it's $41 and some change. Pretty expensive for a gasket. I may get the Fel-Pro for now until I have alittle extra funds for the ford gasket.
Another thing, is it possible to have alot of compression on the top end (upgrading from stock to oval port head w/ RR cam and bigger valves) and screw the bottom end up (rod bearings, etc.)?

dude DO NOT waste your money on the felpro, b/c it is a waste. buy the black ranger one. That thing will last forever. Id put the old one back on and deal with a leak before I buy another blue felpro one.
Like Pete said hand tight with the extension.
Ford can usually get there parts the next day and If you order it early in the morning they will sometimes have it that day. Or try another dealership and see if they have it.
