I have been trying to identify the different part numbers for a VAF for a 87 TC 5spd. I had to have mine replaced in 99 while on a trip to Las Vegas. The part number I have on mine is E7SZ12B529A

Is this a small VAM ( I think so). The sucker cost me $457.59 plus shipping plus labor with a grand total of 768.56. Talk about a bad gambling trip. Anyways, any help in identifying the part number for the large VAF would be appreciated.

E7xx part number indicates a a part either first released in 1987 or updated in 1987. AFAIK, neither the big or small VAM (all made by Bosch, even though it has the FORD oval on it) have never been updated, so I suspect yours is a 1987 part, meaning it is a "big" VAM, which is should be for 87-88 TCs.

Yup, the Ford part is a RIP OFF! You can get a quality reman (A1 Cardone, Standard Motor Products, etc) that has had all electronics replaced and has been recalibrated from just about anywhere for about $100 with a $30 core deposit.

BTW, if a small VAM would have been installed, that would not be compatable with your 87 EEC, and the car would run like total crap if it even ran at all.

Well dealers are all rip-off but with no tools and just in Vegas for a few days what can you do. The VAF started crapping out about 20 miles from Baker CA and we limped / chuged all the way to Vegas (100 miles) in about 3 hours. Well I had to get back to work so I took it to the nearest dealer which was Gaudin Ford. They diganoised the problem and then found only two in the country and they shipped one from SF so I could get back to Cali for work. At least mine is only 6 years old now instead of 19.. lol

The vaf works great and had no problems. just wondering what the part numbers were for the small and big VAF's

By the way I would never personally put any imission parts on that were not ford/motocraft. As for Cardone. I'd rather push it. I work on Buses all day and we have sent back over 10 distributors due to poor workmanship and they simply would wear out in 3 months. I do not like cardone's quality at all. Just a personal observation

57 Fan - Yeah I got a "Motorcraft" (cast into the distributor body) remans done by A-1. Was so badly machined that it wouldn't fit into the block. After massaging it for awhile, I got it in. Car wouldn't start. Run some TFI/PIP diagnostices. The PIP was DOA! Got one that worked from NAPA but it was still A1 Cardone

Measure the diameter of the out-let size of the vam. There is a considerable difference between the both. We've changed the vam on my Son's 86' TC, and we've seen the difference. I don't know the measurements off the top of my head. Any way they mount different. They have different brackets and they (brackets) don't interchange. I can try to look up the #'s later(if you stil want them).

Turbojet,
App. 2 5/8" for an 83 (small VAM) and 3 1/16" for an 88 (large VAM). I am in the process of doing this myself Big Grin

I've been looking for information on this swap. What are the advantages of the larger VAM in an '86? Are there any other changes needed, computer? Can you provide more info on the bracket differences and what effort it takes to get the larger on to mount? Will the filter box still mount above it? Let us know. Thanks

VAM, computer, and injectors must all "match" or the car will run like crap. there were 3 varaitions.... Large VAM / 35 lb injectors, Large VAM and 30 lb, small VAM and 30 lb.
