Car will not start with VAM unplugged
VAM voltage 0.25 volts (1/4 volt) with KOEO
Intercooler has been removed at this time.
(assuming car should start with intercooler removed)

Testing summary to this point:
*timing perfect
*fuel pressure 38psi
*Code 42
*throttle position voltage 0.97
*FPR seems ok
*all hoses I can find seem good
*VAM voltage 0.25 volts

Won't start. It cranks & sputters, smells of gas.
I still have very old plug wires, distributer cap, rotor.

Comments greatly appreciated.

Geoff

Can you explain the events that occurred just before this problem started?

When you say timing is perfect, is that cam timing, ignition timing, or both?

Cam timing between the center and left mark through the sight hole in timing belt cover, ignition timing 10 degrees btdc, spout out.
The car was running great, I parked it for an hour, started driving again, running rough, got worse and soon (within a mile) would no longer idle, died, has not started since.
I've got the intercooler and everything back together, still wont start with VAM unplugged.
I believe all hoses are in good shape. It got a good inspection with intercooler off. I'm going to replace distributer cap & rotor now. Then, I'll be out of ideas.

I would do a compression test just to make sure you didn't blow a head gasket.

Replaced cap & rotor, no start. Just for fun I ran the codes again and double checked. Got codes 58 & 66 which are not on my list??? Probably from when I had the intercooler off?
I'll try compression test another day when I'm not so discouraged. Any comments on above codes is appreciated. Is EEC computer even a possibility? FPR even though nothing obvious?

Thanks, Geoff

58 and 66 are from disconnecting the VAM.

Any chance you have an extra distributor with TFI module you could drop in? Or even just a spare TFI?

PCM's (EEC) do go bad. Up until a month or so ago I had never had an '87-'88 TC, so I don't have as much experience with the added electronics, but I think the PCM going bad on a later model will exhibit symptoms like the fans running continuously as soon as the key is switched on, fuel pump not priming, etc. Jeff K is more knowledgeable about that stuff.

I would not suspect an EEC failure with the information given thus far. An EEC failure is rare, especially out of the blue, and will cause a lot of weird issues. That the car smells like gas must mean the fuel pump is being primed by the EEC and the fuel injectors are receiving commands to fire.

Do you know what the ECT voltage is?

Have you tried pulling the distributor completely out? Maybe the shear pin on the dizzy gear let go?
