Valve train Noise

Need some Help with this one .Started getting a noise from top end of motor after a 100 mile trip up state sounds sorta like a water pump about to go bad, like a pulley with a v-belt slipping but its comming from the middle of the valve cover. This noise comes and goes along with a small miss and Ive noticed that the oil pressure is running lower than it has in the past (factory oil gauge) was running in middle of gauge now near bottom but not all the way down. Also sounds like a sewing machine when not making other noise. Thanks for any and all help

The sending units for oil pressure do go bad with age, and generally start reading lower. I would recommend checking the oil pressure with a under hood mechanical gauge. Then go from there with further diagnostics. One of those automotive type stethescopes (sp?) can be a big help in determining noises.

Hey Man...another Tarheel !!! I'm in Greensboro ! We should hook up sometime !

Pete's right. It could be several things but I assume it's a Collapsed Lash Adjuster (lifter). If you have low oil pressure, chances are the Lash Adjuster isn't pumping up with oil like it should. Also probably on the #1 Cylinder as it's the last one to get oil from the pump.

I agree that the #1 lash adjuster is usually the culpret. BUT I think you have a problem with the oiling system and it is not builing enough pressure and a lash adjuster is the weak link.

I would suspect a possible clogged oil pump screen, but thats a guess. Either way check it out, low oil pressure can do very bad things.

I have somewhat of an interesting question... on my 89 crown vic I completely did away with the sending units for the oil pressure and water temp... would this effect the eec if I did this on my TC? I would be getting rid of the ones that supply signal for the guages... lastly, anyone know how or where I can get a plate for 3 - 2" guages to go in the hole that is where the eq used to be?

methos, or Jason.
I've removed my water temp sender and it hasn't affected anything.
I think the EEC has it's own senders in manifold or somewhere.
I have yet to remove my oil sender. I can't get at it. lol

Methos, The guage sensors for water temp and oil pressure do not provide data to the EEC on our engines. The ECT in between #2 & 3 injectors provides the coolant data to the EEC. The EEC doesn't recieve data on oil pressure.

Gary2, use a crowsfoot wrench 9/16 on the bottom side of the sending unit.
