Used Axle Question...

Looking at perhaps buying a set of used axles... seller states that there is no wear to feel. Probably can't tell much from the photo, but that's what I have to go on.

What is current availability on new 87/88 TC axles? Do they need to be made to order by moser? I was thinking that worst case I could send these off to be duplicated and have the abs rings swapped.

Seller wants $40 plus shipping (probably another $40.)

Anyone familiar with the problem areas or know what would be a good options?

I've never done the axles so I don't know what to say about the axles in the picture. Personally, it=f I were fixing it for the long run, I would go new and would go to Mosher first. Many people have reported being satisfied with them.

What are your overall goals. If you don't need performance axles do you want to risk $80 on the chance these will be good?

I had to replace one axle about 6 years ago and managed to get it from Ford. Forget what it cost tho.

Generally axles will start pitting on the bearing surface which makes starts making noise...

The left one appears fine(assuming it's in same condition on the full circumference)... Hard to tell but the right one does appear to have some wear...

Just looking to have the parts around that I may need when replacing the axle bearings. The abs rings are hard to come by too, so it may be worth the $80 to have them available to be swapped.

I'm just starting to hear a "whoop, whoop" sound at low speed (10 - 20 mph) on occasion. May be the rear U joint, but they were replaced last year. I noticed when putting the driveshaft in the rear U joint would seem to get a little stiff in one direction, but when I tapped it with a hammer, it loosened up. I will probably replace it soon to see.

well, i had my axle bearings done awhile back, and the shop found that the bearings had chewed down quite a bit of the axle. they moved to contact point to a different spot, (using 'saver' bearings) and that was 2 years, 300 passes, and about 20,000 miles ago (including carlisle). everything is fine as of now. id say those will be just fine, but ill bet yours really arent that bad either..but id have to see them.

Well I went ahead and got them to add to the collections of parts. Seller indicates nor pitting or wear and has a good reputation, so I'll roll the dice on 'em. It's sort of like preventative maintenance... buy a part and then never need it
