upgrading 1-wire O2 sensor to 3 (or 4) wire

looks like my O2 sensor is dead;

in TurboDodge world,
a common upgrade is to convert to 3- or 4-wire O2 sensor.

do any y'all TurboFord guys do that ?
is there a website or FAQ/write-up on-line ?

(does the 87-8 also use a 1-wire sensor ?)

As far as I know, the only benefit to having a 4-wire sensor for our application is the elimination of the resistance caused by the sig. return wire being attached to a different part of the turbo. The sensor is so close to the turbo that I don't think the pre-heater function is going to be of much use. could be wrong though...

87-88 use 3 wire. 1 wire or 3 wire can be converted easily to 4 wire. Just connect the orange wire at turbo inlet to the O2 negative wire. For 1 wire to 3 or 4 wire, just run the 2 heater wires to 12V key in run and ground.

Question: what's the actual benefit of the upgrade? Also, what year TC has a 1-wire? If 87/88 has a 3-wire and my 84 has a 3-wire...

my '86 is a one-wire. I thought they all were, but apparently I was dead wrong!

I was told it gives a more accurate reading to the computer by running a 3 wire.I have a one wire on my 86 but if I can see a quick and simple way to run a 3 wire and the performance/efficiency gain is true, I'm in.

The dedicated ground wire on the 4 wire provides a "cleaner" signal to the PCM than the 3 wire that uses the O2 itself as the signal ground via the orange wire at the turbo. The 3 or 4 wire has a built in resistive heater, around 12 to 15 Watts power, to heat the sensing element. The sensing element doesnt work until in hits around 600 deg F, so the heater warms it up faster, allowing for closed loop operation sooner after a start.

RC.... someone must have converted your 84 to 3 wire, as 83-86 came from the factory with 1 wire.

Good to know! Thanks for the explanation also, makes sense.

How odd. The wiring on mine definitely doesn't look converted. Put a ~$60 Bosch on there a few years back, 100% sure it's a 3-wire. http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/6061/30935137.png

I swear the mysteries never end with my 84.
