unusual problem.... Help!

Hey guys, I've got a really wierd problem with my 88 TC (automatic). After the engine has warmed up, the car stalls sometimes at a stop when the brakes are applied. I wouldn't be at such a loss if the car had vacuum-assisted brakes, but it has the hydraulically assisted ABS. If you shift into neutral, and take your foot off the brakes, it idles okay. I've pulled the codes (several times), and there is nothing there.

I've replace the IAC, the TPS, the previous owner replaced the EGR valve. Also, the distributor cap, rotor, wires, and plugs are all new (Ford parts.) The fuel filter is new, but I'm a little concerned about the fuel pump - it's making a louder than normal noise, but it appears to be pumping okay. I have not put a gauge on the schrader valve to check the pressure.

Anyone have an ideas?

Thanks in advance!!!

Sounds like a fuel pump to me. Thats where I would start. They are pretty easy to do.

If the fuel pump is getting louder, that's a good bet that it's on it's way out. I would do the fuel system diagnostics to check the whole system, but plan on doing the pump soon. One of mine started getting louder and after getting some opinions here, I replaced it before it failed.

Sounds like exactly the problem I had with mine just after I had the tranny rebuilt. Sound like the solinoid for the converter lockup is sticking. The fact that it doesn't do it all the time and doesn't do it at all if you shift into neutral points at that as well. You may need to change your transmission fluid and filter to help clear up the problem, however if it is sticking because of old fluid, you may have soem leaks later after the sludge is cleaned out.

it actually sounds like what happens if youre driving a car thats stick and just leave it in gear when stopping. try this, just to humor me....next time it happens shift down into "1" and see if it helps.

If by shifting in 1 will cure the problem than I know your problem, it's a governor that goes in the tail shaft of your trans, you're going to have to take it to the trans shop and see if they can fix it.

dropping out of OD or D into 2nd or 1st will force the converter to unlock. I would take it to a tranny shop and have them look at it.
