Undercoating on a summer car

Hi guys,

Hope everyone had a good summer. I certainly did -- with the heater core repaired I've been driving the Tbird a lot more than I did in the two years previous. However it's getting cold out and I'm debating my next move.

Last year I kept the tbird in a garage for the winter. This year we're in a different house with only a carport.

The first year I had the car when it got dinged, the body shop noticed it had been being undercoated and asked me if I wanted to do it again. I figured for the $110.00 it was worth it.

I totally forgot about it last year and am wondering if I should do it this year. Opinions? The car never goes on the road (I'm told the 'salt' used on our roads *very* occasionally isn't really salt) in winter.. but it will be more exposed this year.

Also I noticed they have the holes drilled for what i'm guessing is oilspraying the body. Again, worth doing? Never done this before so don't know cost/benefit, etc. This is the pacific northwest -- not a lot of snow here, if any in winter. Mostly rain, humidity.

Thanks again!

Only an opinion but if it isn't a show car and kept in a climate controlled garage I would get it done just because of the the rain and humidity exposer

Hey Pete -- another thing I was going to ask about --- car covers... that a good idea for an outdoor car? I'm concerned about moisture being trapped and building up underneath.

I really should get my tools out and build up that carport as a garage. only needs one wall and a door.

I've had a covercraft on my car for the 5+ years I've owned it and it dries out just fine way before the streets do; and it's still in great shape. It does collect dust uncer it though, that's my only complaint. We even had many hailstorms and snow and it didn't affect it at all. I believe the cover helped protect it agains the hail alot.

The previous owner to my car undercoated it befor he parked it for 10 years. I find it sucks working on anything under the car and when the car gets hot the oil smokes off at red lights and such. I wouldnt do it to my car in a million years but its your call..just my thoughts!

If the car was undercoated, then I don't think you should have to do it again. Rubberized undercoating should last at least 4-5 years before it would satrt to peel off.

Another good way to undercoat the car would be with Sparyable Truck bed coating. That stuff is tuff and it doesn't want to come off. It would also not want to chip. I used it on suspension parts and it has been on there for 2yrs and looks good cleans up nice.

That's the stuff I'm going to put under my Bird. So many more advantages over the regular undercoating.
