I'm trying to help Jim fix his car. He has a bone stock 86 TC. Its been running like its on two cylinders. I has a freshly rebuilt head, new plugs, new wires, rebuilt injectors, new TFI.

Things we checked.

It has strong spark.
Timing is perfect
dizzy is spinning normal
Compression is good on all four cylinders.

I did an injector balance(Pulled connectors off each injector while running) and #1 and #2 has no change when pulled. It leads me to believe tbey are not firing, or getting signal.

What should we check now? Pip sensor? Computer?

What could cause two injectors not to fire.

1 & 2 are on a circuit together. 3 & 4 are on another circuit. 1 & 2 go to pin 58 at the ECA. 3 & 4 go to pin 59. Check your email.

Do 1 & 2 both have 12V on the red wire? Check with a test light. If that is OK, use a NOID light to se if the PCM is grounding the injectors to fire them. If in fact they arent firing, check continuity of the wires back to the PCM.

PIP will not cause this problem, and neither will TFI.

I'm going to have Jim pull the computer and install one of my known good PC1's. If that doesn't solve it, He will then have to track down a short.

if you take a marker/tag lamp bulb (194) and bend the electrical contact tabs down and stick it in the connector it can act a cheap niod light.

I had a the exact same problem on my 1986 SVO when it had just 250 Miles on it.

The Injectors were defective - If you are running Rebuilt Bosch Injectors - I would check Continuity at Each Injectors Connector -

Bosch injectors tend to have "issues" here - new or rebuilt

One more item -

I have spent thousands of hours working with Bosch Diesel Injectors in my Advanced Fuel Systems development testing projects. While Diesel Bosch Diesel ( CRIN-1& 2 ) are certainly different animals - Everything is after all Controlled electrically -

97% ( Really the number is that high based on our experience) of the Time we have a problem with an injector not firing - It can be traced to the Injectors Top End Internals or Connectors. Not the EMS or wiring harnesses - Even our Experimental ones.

My Two cents worth

UPDATE: SHE LIVES!!! We swapped in a known good Merkur computer since the pinouts are the same and I didnt have another PC1 handy, and she fired right up and running on all 4 cylinders!!
You can see from this link the pinouts for Merkur and 83-86 TC are almost all the same.

Now its time for his LA3 swap!

Looks like I wont be the only TC at Knotts next year. Yay!!
