Tweecer or Megasquirt

I am trying to figure out which system to go with on my friends car. Tweecer RT or Megasquirt? It is a 88 TC with a gillis boost controller set at 18lbs, K&N cone filter, three inch down pipe and exhaust. Soon to be installed: Ported E6, gutted upper and ported lower intake, and snow performance stage 1 boost cooler. We are going to see what we can get out of this arrangement with tuning the stock computer seeing as it will be a while before he upgrades his turbo, head , and intercooler. Thanks everyone.......KP

I do realize that you can't tune the factory computer with MS. I am basically wanting to know if Tweecer would be best for him right now or to just go ahead and invest in a MS setup.

You should tune with whatever system the tuner is most comfortable with. From what I understand, the MS is a stand alone, so no need for an air meter. If you go tweecer, you need a chip or something, and an air meter, which would mean you should do a MAF swap. Honestly, with those mods, I say best bet is to leave the ecu stock, get an adj fpr, wideband, and play with the timing/fuel pressure until you get a desired afr and it makes best power (assuming your dyno tuning). and adj cam gear helps too.

Moates Quarterhorse. Waaaay better than Tweecer RT, cheaper too. More powerful and infinitely more user friendly. Forget about Megasquirt too, major PITA to get setup correctly.

The QH lets you make adjustments to the factory calibration. You can start with small steps until you are comfortable with it and then you can start taking bigger bites. The EECs have been pretty well cracked for those cars so you can get pretty wild with the mods. They have even worked out how to run MAF or MAP with them. (Although I still don't understand why anyone would run MAP.)

Steve: Have you used a quarterhorse? What all does my friend need to use this system (QH and software, wideband, etc.)?

I know some people say MS is simple and others say its a PITA to setup and get running. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Anyone that has either one of these systems feel free to chime in with any advice also.

If it was me id find out just how far he would want to go with his build and if its gunna be daily driven or just flat out race.
I mention these cause MS will let you go as far as you could ever wanna go. Not sure how far a QH or tweecer will let you go before you find a limitation. An if its a daily driver or even street legal you might wanna find out if Stand alones are even legal in your state i know some states wont allow them due to smog checks. So in those states you'd be screwed if you went with a MS.

If you live where a standalone is taboo.......move. Just kidding. My MS is housed inside an EEC case and plugs right in to the EEC plug. It was built by turbodad over on TF. If I had to be smogged (I don't), all I would have to do is plug back in my EEC, swap my 75lb injectors back to the stock ones and plug in my VAM....done.

Fomoco spent millions of dollars in r&d, and TEAMS of people, for the EEC-IV. How much did Bowling & Grippo spend on MS? You'll be hard pressed to find anything as good as, much less better then, the OEM ECU. I have yet to see anything that aftermarket can do(baddly) that the EEC can do with ease. The Quarterhorse gives you complete access along with user friendliness that is unprecedented. I've used it in my MAF conversion, and all I can say is, wow. It's just plain awesome.
On a side note, nearly 2/3 of the code in an LA3 is devoted to boost control, I've seen it. You guys that disconnect the BCS and hook up a Gillis are missing out on the best part of our ECU's. Quarterhorse gives you access to those tables and you can set up your boost to do nearly anything you want. FYI, if you leave your knock sensor hooked up as well (and you should), you have the ultimate built in two step safety feature. When you start to detonate the EEC pulls timing, contrary to popular belief it isn't that much(I swear), if you don't let off the throttle it begins pulling timing AND boost simultaneously. Ever increasing until you reduce load. How many headgaskets and how much money will that save annually? Have fun setting that up on MS. Ford engineers are some smart emeffer's, why reinvent the wheel? I'd rather stand on the shoulders of giants. Quarterhorse no question about it.

alot less than ford did 20+ years ago since technology has advanced tremendously. yes you candoalot with the stock ecu but you must nothave had your hands on a ms lately and tried any of the new programs available.. like the new tuner studio. much easier to use. set it intune mode, drive the car and it pretty much does the work....no analyzing, it just tunes as you drive...
88tc (sold) but keeping an eye out.
