what is the max boost this engine will take? what would be the best turbo to swap to get near that psi?

Max boost the engine will take? People run in the high 30's on the track... It's all about supporting mods. What are you looking to do?

There's a few more items to consider. Stock engine, never torn down with stock head bolts and original headgasket? Using 93 octane pump gas? If you would like it to live and not blow the headgasket, stay at 18 psi or below. Also, you have to consider more fuel if you want to add more boost (larger turbo). Fuel pressure regulator (FPR), larger injectors and a fuel pump with greater capacity.

Having said that, a T3/T4 hybrid, with a .63 housing, will do the trick along with a new (aftermarket) FPR. Use a Gillis valve to limit your boost. Some will say you can go to 20 psi, but you're the one changing the headgasket. Do a lot of research :read:, via Google or other search engines. Read :read: lots of past posts on the board.

I have 110,000 miles on my stock 86 with the stock engine i want to reaplace the head gasket and do head studs(? i think thats what they are) and do a bo port cam, should i do a 1.5 or 1.9?
I also have a full front mount intercooler set up with gillis bov and a hks blow off valve. i plan to install a new fuel pump 255+.
for now im running stock because i cant get my gillis to work (overboosting) for now i just want to do 15-18 till the engine work is done then after that i wanted to be in the 25-35 psi range. i really try to do allot of searches in the forums but the search kind of really sucks unless you know word for word

The issue is how much HP do you want to make and for what purpose. The way to make HP is with air flow. Boost is nothing more than resistance to air flow. The higher the boost needed to accomplish the goal (HP) the more potential and real problems are possible. More boost means hotter charge air which is thinner (less oxygen), more likely to cause detonation which can blow head gaskets, damage pistons and worse. The theoretical better solution is to size a turbo, that can flow what is needed at relatively lower boost levels as opposed to overworking and overspining a too small turbo at too high boost levels.

+1 on Pete's reply! Horsepower costs money and the 2.3 needs lots of $$$$.$$ if you are wanting 25 to 35 lbs of boost. You can make good street HP with 20 PSI but, there is more to it than boost. First, get rid of the back pressure with a 3" down pipe and a smooth flowing system from there back. More boost = more fuel which means, an adjustable FPR, good fuel pump. A better cam would help and also a front mount intercooler. Now at that point, you need to make the decision about more. More means $$$$.$$ lots of $$$$.$$. Do you want this to be a daily driver? If yes, 20 PSI is plenty. Over 25 PSI, you're talking major modifications, starting at the crank and going up. I've become really fluent in this lately and I'm no where near finished. $$,$$$.$$ :read: :read: :read:

With the 86 TC you have the T3 turbo...which is much better for higher performance than the IHI....
