Turbo Noise

Should my turbo be making a whislting noise before boost? At about 3-ish" Hg to 0" Hg it makes a whistling noise. It spools up and hits about 14-15psi easily and has no boost fluctuation. I recorded it with my phone. It sounds like I'm driving through the woods, but I was holding my phone with my shifting hand.

Check for air leaks and inspect the turbo. It only takes 10 minutes...

son of a gun, Im having the same noise I thought it was the trans since I am having problems with it. But my turbo is new with about 10,000 miles on it. just curious how old is your turbo? Im hoping it has something todo with the exhuast not being totally tight. Did you loosen the dp at all?

A whistle or siren type of noise is normal, more so when the air is cold. Mine has always had a siren sound to it since it was new. If this just started you most likely have a leak.

I'm sure the turbo is original. I've only had the car a month but I bought it from the original owner. Contrary to beleif, original owners don't always take care of the car. I haven't touched the exhaust. There is no noise when it's producing boost.

just to let you know I did some maintaining of the vehicle today checked for shaft play and so on. I believe I have a cracked exhuast housing. The whistling gets louder as the car warms up infact i cant even hear it when the car is started up after sitting over night. I removed the IC and there is black crap over everything. and it all points to the main body of the turbo and the hot side where it bolts up to. I do have some side to side play now and the last time i checked (early June of 05) i had none what so ever. the fins have the chance to touch the housing but i dont see any gouges in the side. I turned the boost down to about 5 psi to try and hinder the grenade of it while I hunt for a new turbo. what do I think caused it, previous owner had no boost control on it at all the BCS was bipassed and the back two tires were bald when i got it. and failure of an oil feed line that i didnt catch till it was pouring out all over.

You won't see "gouge" marks usually. You will see shiney areas where the blade tips burnished the housing. Also you can't tun the boost down to less than about 9.5 psi, what the WGA is set for

Then that would explain the polished look inside the housing. 9.5 it is. Im not up for throwing on a used turbo without the backing of a descent sitting around so Im not gonna put that T3 on that is sitting in my shed. I emailed Scott just to see what I turn up. Im hoping 4-500 will cover it since Im trying to save up for paint.
