Hard to shop for things when everything is phone or online order only.
Fortunately Canadian Tire is now open and I was able to get what I think is the gasket material you were talking about. Just wanted to post a picture get you to confirm this is the stuff.
Just looks like paper to me. Says it's called Karropak Tan Fiber sheet. For sealing oil coolant and gasoline.
It almost looks like the paper tube inside paper towel, lighter in color.

That will work, just trace the shape, cut it out and place in between and tighten down.
