HI GUYS,I'M TRYING TO INCREASE THE PSI ON MY '88 TURBO COUPE.I TURNED THE BOOST CONTROL VALVE 1/2 A TURN CW BUT I'M NOT SURE IF I'M MAKING A DIFFERENCE.WHAT IS THE GAGE IN THE DASH GOING TO SHOW, LIKE FOR INSTANCE IF I INCREASE THE VALVE TOO MUCH WILL I SEE THE NEEDLE IN THE GAGE ALMOST HIT THE RED LIMIT? ALSO, IS THERE A SAFE OR MAXIMUM BOOST SETTING I SHOULD BE USING? I'VE HEARD YOU CAN ADJUST THE VALVES YO CREATE MORE BOOST BUT HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH OR WHAT WOULD BE THE MAXIMUM? THANK YOU PHILLIEB

I've heard you don't want to go above about 18psi with the IHI, and that the factory boost gauge isn't very accurate. You should probably get an aftermarket gauge for a better boost/vac reading. There are also other affordable upgrades that are a lot safer than cranking up the boost, if you haven't done any already.

Also, all capital letters is totally unnecessary!

In general, the dash gauge is very inaccurate. Before upping the boost, I would install a good quality aftermarket vacuum / boost gauge.

If you are using a Gillis valve with the standard spring, 1/2 turn will only roughly be around 1 psi or so boost increase.

I have no clue what you are talking about when you say "adjust the valves...".

Hi guys, Sorry about the capitals. What I'm trying to do before totally upgrading the turbo, is try to get maximum boost from the orginal. What I meant by adjusting the valves was off. I've heard you can "play around with the boost valve" for more or less boost. I don't want to harm the motor by over boosting it. So what would you say is a safe setting?

Anything over 18 psi is going to overheat the air which increases the risk of detonation. It is also going to over speed the turbo which may shorten it's life.
