Hi all, hope someone can help me with this dilema. I picked up my new daily driver,it kinda came with a box of parts, you know the scenario, cheap car some assembly required. Well I had to install the exhaust manifold and turbo (amongst other things) that were missing from the car, but given to me by the seller. Not the ones off the car though. I went to the parts counter at work to order the manifold bolts, and manifold to turbo gasket, the guy asked me auto or stick. They are different? how can I tell by looking at one to see which one I have? Ok, there's more, I will eventuallly take the engine and trans(auto) out of my old totally totaled bird and put them in this one. That is one reason I wanted to know. Thanx to all for any answers.
Also the car had no processor in it, so the seller went in his garage and came out with one, how do I know if it is an auto or stick one, what is an LA3? the part# is E7SF-12A650-S1A. Thanx again guys.

LA3 = 87-88 5 speed computer. You will need an auto computer beccause it controls converter lock up on the autos and also the 3-4 shift (I think) The auto computers are LB2 (1987)(E8SZ-12A650-AGA) and 8UA (1988)
(E8SZ-12A650-AGA).
Glad to here you found a car. I tried to call you a couple times about the Ohio car on Ebay awhile back.
I have heard of this difference in P/Ns on turbo related parts between auto and stick, but I'll be damned if I know what actual differences are, if any.
I've never hear of anyone doing the auto to 5 spd swap saying they had to get different manifold bolts or turbo gasket. Maybe someone else can clarify this. My guess is go with what you can get

I swapped a auto turbo into a 5 speed TC. Used the original gaskets, I didn't see any difference in them. Only problem was it would only build about 8lb boost. Guess the auto waste gate is set to dump at lower boost. With a small leak to the wastegate I had made 13-14psi when it was still on the automatic engine(my ex TC).

Thanx for the reply Pete, and Turbocoupe50,
Me and the parts guy were both very curious and ended looking turbos for our cars. And found the auto and stick turbos to have different part #s, and prices. One is $300.00 more than the other, $1800.00 vs $2100.00 I just wondered if the one the guy gave me with the car was a stick or auto turbo, and if the processor he gave me was a stick processor. Pete, I have the auto processor in the wrecked bird to use in the swap, and yes, the computer does both converter lock up, and 4th gear scheduling.
Does the computer have LA3 anywhere on it, and if so where? Thanx again for the help, I hope to have this project done in about two weeks weather permitting, minus the engine swap! That is next spring I hope.
Pete, sorry I did not get back to you on that car there in Ohio. My head was a little screwed up at that time, and still is now even worse, the guy that caused the accident, that I stopped to avoid and did, was not insured, the guy that ass ended me was not supposed to be driving the car he was driving under a clause in his brother's policy, that stated he was not covered to drive that car, therefore, no coverage. And my poor car, are you READY! $10,422.56 in damage. The Insurance guy said it is totaled, no s*&t a$%hole! My roof buckled when I got out of the car to see what happened. Yesterday I was taking parts off it and opened the pass. door for the first time, more buckling, and both doors won't close. ok, sorry for such long post, I'm rambling on again.

Bill, There should be a sticker on the connector port of the computer - where the wiring harness. The computer designation-"LA3" on mine is on the right side of the sticker. There will be other #s on the sticker also but the "LA3" is in the largest print.

Thanx Pete, I see no LA3 on this computer anywhere, there is a DS in big letters on the right hand side just above the suffix of the part#, I will check my 87 this week after work and see if it is on that one. That car is a stick. Thanx Pete.

i believe the only difference is what the wastegate is set at, the auto's should be set at 6 psi, while manual is set at 10psi.
at least thats what i understand.
