Ford Tech, I don't understand the first part of your question? Water cooled is supposedly
longer lived than the just oil cooled ones according to the turbo shop people I have talked to. They say it can make a significant difference in the life expectancy.

Pete,

I think he may have been asking if the factory turbos were considered water-cooled or oil-cooled.

Rick, OK thanks. The early cars had oil only turbos. not sure what year they started with the water cooled models, probably 1985.

I thought the T3 was oil cooled, and IHI is oil+water? I'm not sure though. 87-88 had the IHI..

The T3s can be either water cooleed or not water cooled.... just oil. When I bought my T3 from Performance Techniques, water cooling was a no cost option.

I know the 86 TCs had water cooled T3, not sure when they started using the water cooled version.

My 1984 did not have the water cooling, however the replacement turbo does and I will adapt to it.
