Trashing distributors

Brian's car has eaten 3 distributor drive gears in the last 2 weeks along with 2 accessory shafts. Anybody else have this problem or know what could be causing it?

Check your oil pump.

Especially after the first trash...

The pump is driven off the distributor and aux shaft.

Do you have a high pressure pump installed? In some corners there is the opinion that high pressure pumps are not compatible with the 2.3s ability to drive the pump.

How much of a PITA is it to change the oil pump?

Major league PITA. It can be done with the engine in the car but you have to jack the engine up quite a bit so you can get the oil pan off the engine.

I wonder if it wouldn't be easier to support the engine from above and drop the whole front frame/suspension off the car.

HV and HP pumps are notorious for causing failure of the drive gears on the dizzy. After the first one goes, you got gear particles floating around the engine. Since all the oil doesn't get filtered the particles can stay in circulation for awhile.

If a particle get into the pump where clearances are tight, it can bind the pump and there goes the next set of gears. It becomes a vicious circle until everything is cleaned well and a stock type pump is installed

Once the pan is off the pump is easy to get to, if you are wondering about that. Two accessible bolts, 8mm 12pts.
