sounds like someone has been running the engine hard before the oil was up to temperature...

Also check the distributor shaft for sideplay. That can cause a gear to fail also.

The 2.3 ford aux shaft is another weak spot in the engine design. A lot of ford engines suffer from this problem not only 2.3. i RUN AN AUX OIL LINE TO THE DISTRIBUTOR TOWER WITH A RESTRICTOR IN IT. That way you are shure the gears are not starved of oil. But i think the real problem is fatigue of the parts. Never use a hi volume or hd pump. I monitor the oil preasure on 2.3 and reduce the overall total preasure to save the gears. I replace the aux shaft and dissy gear every 10,000 miles or every 2 to 3 years. Which ever comes first. I also do the timing belt along with it. (I dont want to bend a stainless valve if i loose the belt). You can get new aux shafts and dizzy gears fairly easy or run a billet one and bronz gear. The key is replacing them before they break and flood the engine with mettal chips that will jam the oil pump gears. I always rap a screen around the pump pickup to filter out the big chips to an extent. screen door screen works great. (not the plastic stuff)Hope this helps.
