trashed turbo or not?

im thinking about rebuilding the turbo in my parts 85 tc. the turbo is a IHI it has no shaft play side to side. it pulls in and out about 1/16 of an inch very minimal. and the cold side turbine or whatever it is called looks pretty good. with almost no marks on the housing. think i should hold onto it? i want to put it on my mustang. thanks

A small amount of endplay is normal, I believe. With what you've said, it sounds like a good turbo to me.

1986 TC, 132k pretty well taken care of miles. k&n, gillis@16, timing @ 12 (spout out), A/C delete. 3" Downpipe (no other exhaust... Whoever described that sound as a "pissed off tractor" hit the nail on the head)

If nothings hitting the housing and the fins look ok just run it.Besides when it does go out thats a good excuse to throw a t3 on it. [Image: smile.gif]

Are these almost not marks from the compressor blades?

Pete you sound like you speak from experiance? lol it is hard to tell. it is dirty. i rubbed my fingers around it and i didnt feel any groves. i mean very minimal in and out play but enough that when i move it it clicks when i push it all the way in and all the way out. it spins freely to it would probably spin all day.

i thin i figured how to put my new motor in the mustang. strap this turbo to the old one and boost to 10 psi haha. blow it up.
