Gents,

Spank here! Just got finished putting in new clutch into the bird. Pilot bearing was just powder in the crank! Everything is shifting well except for 2 things.... clutch seems "gummy" but i never opened the hydraulic system. Second, if I get on the car hard in 1st and shift to 2nd, 2nd grinds before going into gear. I am assuning synchronizers? Car does have 168K on it.... comments?

Thanks

I am far from an expert but...

If the clutch isnt really disengaging and your syncros are on the way out, grinding would be a sign.

I would make certain that the clutch is doing it's thing, engagement travel and such. The pilot being worn out.... perhaps related.

The trans I pulled out of mine had 1st-2nd and 3rd syncros killed. I could only doubleclutch shift. That kinda kills the experience.

Only thing I can suggest, if you can, if the trans is going south, fix it earlier than later, the more time junk has to tear away at every other moving part (and there are an impressive number of them) the repair bill goes higher.

In my case, it wasnt worth repair, I just found another used one.

(Although I just saw one on ebay that had been sprayed ! silver, sold as-is, for $475. If only my karma would allow me to do this with mine.... perhaps if I stated, slight grinding, or 'drive your car like a classic, requires double clutching just like a model T'

But I digress....

Anyone else ?

Take a look at the slave cylinder. Carefully peel the rubber boot down and see how wet it is at the end of the cylinder. If it drips it probably needs to be replaced. A little moisture is normal

The rod from the slave cylinder should move a minimum of 0.53" when the clutch is pushed to the floor

Did you change the inout shaft bearing retainer or at least make sure it was smooth? (what the TO bearing slides on) If it is groved or scored the TO bearing can bind.

Sounds like it could be a syncro. My 82K trans was getting a little notchy when shifting but no grinding. I put in 4 oz of friction modifyer when I refilled it and it has made a significant difference in how smooth it shifts.

Hey Pete. Thanks for that little bit of advice. I was wondering how the tranny shop screwed up my throw out bearing. It still chirps.

Hwyman, it could be the clutch fork/pivot making the noise.
