TPS adjustment ?

Well, I,ve treid to get the car to start after unlugging IAC sensor but it will not run. If it is started and I unplug it it will also die. The instructions mention turning the engine off after reaching normal operating temp. but do not tell you when to restart the motor. The next instruction regarding the motor is to turn the motor off again. Am I missing something?

The engine needs to be warm before hand so that it doesn't idle faster than normal like it might if cold. After unplugging the IAC, restart the engine. If it won't stay running, turn the idle adjustment screw in to hold the throttle open a little more and try to restart again. You may have to turn the idle secrew in more. Once the car is started, set the idle as close to 700 rpms as possible yet it stays running, by adjusting the idle screw.

O.K. Pete. I did what you said, which was something I knew I could do before hand but did not think it would be the proper procedure. I got it to run and then I checked the voltage. The highest I could get was .75 volts. I am thinking that perhaps this could happen due to the fact that there are 2 different part #'s for the TPS from Ford. I got the one that was recommended in one of the old posts, the E6ZF I believe. Could the other sensor, the E7, be calibrated differently? I also read that some guys enlarge the cutouts to allow for more adjustment. Is this also advisable?

Sorry but I don't know about any potential calibration differences. I never had to enlarge the slots but I think it was Jeff K that mentioned it. I would say that if Jeff says it's OK, it is.

Did you loosen both screws on the TPS before trying to adjust it? Just a thought.

Yes Pete, I did loosen both. I guess I will wait and see if Jeff K answers this post. But for now, the car runs fine, but sometimes, when stopping at a light or whatever, the idle dips a bit below 1000, then resets itself back to 1000. I also hear this is not uncommon. I guess I can live with it for now. I certainly don't want to dish out another 35US for another TPS to find out that it is the exact same thing, only a different casting #. Thanks for the help anyways. One more thing, when doing a KOER test is it common for the engine to rev at 3000 for ther entire test?

As far as I know, there are no calibration differences between the 2 parts, but there could very well be manufacturing tolerances. Remember that turning the base idle screw on the throttle linkage also turns the TPS, changing its voltage output, so if you cant get the correct voltage, be sure the base idle speed is set up correctly first.

Elongating the TPS mounting holes works well to increase the adjustment range.

Thanks Jeff. I did, however, set the base idle with the IAC disconnected the best I could with the stock tach. to 750 rpm. That's when I couldn't get it to give me any more voltage. Its running fine, but because I can't get it to set at or around 1v, it drives me crazy.
