I use a pair of 225/50/16 Mitchelin XGT sports to race on. They are about a inch shorter and wider than the 225/60/16s. I haven't noticed a problem, but a smaller tire will make the speedo readings a little faster than the car is actually traveling.

I've got 225/50/16 BFG and they are nice size for the car.Takes off quik and makes the car feel peppier.I like the fact that my speedo is out a bit.Gives me some leeway for radar.lol

The 225s are the stock width on the 87/88 TCs. To go much wider would hurt you in the curves. The 50 height is shorter and creates a shorter sidewall (duh) so it makes the sidewall stronger and helps you in the twisties. The snowflake rim is only 7" wide and to go to a wider tire you really should think about a wider rim. I went from 225/60 in the back of my 88 to 245/50 Awesome off the line (still not enough, in fact) but here in northern Arkansas they suck for zipping around the mountains at high speeds. Makes the rear float out real bad. Try some performance 225/50/16 and lower the car an inch. That would look and feel really good. Just some food for thought...

I forgot to say, with the 50s in the back it makes my speedo about 5mph fast at 60mph.
