Timing setting question

OK, thought my timing was set perfect. But I just went out there after about losing my mind with how I can't figure out why my car STILL runs rough and stalls. Lined up my cam via the 3 prong marks, and looked down at the crank mark and it was at 8° BTC. Is this off enough to be my problem? If not, I don't know what else to check.
Also whats the easiest way to get that freakin' phillips head BOLT off to take the timing cover off????

Yes it is off significantly. To illustrate my a230 cam runs best at 4* advanced. I've heard the rnager roller runs best for some people at about 4* retarded. In each case that is less than 1 tooth on the sprocket (each tooth = approx. 9*) If the cam timing is not right, the ignition timing won't be right.

That would do it allright.

I use a # 3 or 4 phillips socket driver in a 3/8 ratchet.

OK, got that timing cover off( good thing I bought a replacement one lol) Now how do I get that Crankshaft pulley off? Heck I don't think I have a big enough socket(biggest I have is a 19mm and its too small. I've looked all in my Chilton book and can't find the how-to on removing it(hoping I haven't bit off more than I can chew)

Thanks for the help,
Jonesy

The crank bolt is 22mm. You don't have to get the crank pully off to reset the cam belt if your are using the old one. However if it jumped timing once, it will do it again and should be replaced. Air gun is the easiest way to get the bolt loose. Other wise get a long breaker bar on the socket

Yeah, I'm gonna have to change out the timing belt, its all stretched out and cracked up. Bought a 20mm and 21mm tonight at work, DANGIT, I almost got the right size, so it will have to wait til Monday morning, gotta work all day tomorrow. Hopefully this fixes my problem of stalling and running like its on 2 cylinders, if not, I have NO CLUE what else it could be!

Thanks fellas,
Jonesy

K, quick question before I get out there and start this, When I go to take the crank pulley off, will this throw off my setting, i.e. turn the crank any? Also does the crank pulley only fit on a certain way so as for me to be able to put it back on in the correct spot it started BEFORE I took it off?
When I set it , I put both the crank and cam marks on TDC? Also whats the right sequence in putting the new timing belt on?(the easiest way where as I'm not trying to stretch it over the last sprocket)
Maybe this made sense.

Put the car in 5th gear and apply the P-brake. This will prevent the crankshaft from turning when you twist the bolt off. The balancer on the crank is keyed; so it will go back on in the same position in relation to the crank. Loosen the bolt on the idler pulley, swing the pulley to release the tension on the belt using a screwdriver; then tighten the bolt to keep the idler released. Change the belt. The cam should be aligned with the pointer; the crank at the TDC location. Release the idler by loosening the bolt. If the alignment marks change try it again but compensate by indexing one of the pulleys by 1 tooth. If it takes a couple of attempts, thats OK. You'll get better quickley as you proceed. Be sure to retighten the bolt on the idler when your finished. Good Luck.

Don't forget about the auxilary pulley for the distributor. Make sure that it is set at the number one spark plug wire on the cap. Pull the cap off and turn the auxilary pulley with the timing belt off until the rotar is aligned with the number one spark plug on the cap. Align up your crank and align your cam, put the timing belt on and make sure the teeth on the belt are adjusted on the sprokets right then tighten the tensioner. Your timing should be set.
