i was wondering if the mark on the casting on the front of the block near the crank has any real purpose.or is it just for show or can the timing be set by it.it seems to line up with the woodruf key on the crank or is that a coincedence.tying to set timing properly and my cover is all broke up

From the cam timing article:

"One way to set # 1 TDC if you don't have a Belt Cover, besides a TDC check in the # 1 plug hole, is to remove the Crank Pulley. You will see the Crank Sprocket which has a belt guard flange on it. The belt guard has a indicator notch on it that will align with a notch in the Crank Front Oil Seal Cover when it's at TDC on # 1."
