I need a little help on timing. I am new to the turbo world and just recently changed my timing belt. My cover is broken and thus need to know a trick or a different way of timing it. Can anyone lead me to a good resource (the ones I have checked out so far all talk about having the cover). Any help would be much appreciated

Are you talking cam timing or ignition timing. If you are talking cam timing see the article "Cam Timing" in the Technical Articles. If it's ignition timing, there is no way to get it accurate without the cover. The cover off any 2.3 OHC engine will work, (Ranger trucks, pre 94 4 cyl Mustangs) It doesn't have to be a turbo engine. Any junk yard. There is even one on e-bay currently.

I am talking about ignition timing. I read the article on the cam timing, all okey there, very helpful, just looking for a way to set my ign. timing.
Thanks

First, you will have to accurately locate TDC, using a TDC finder tool, or, like I have done, jam a wood dowel in the #1 spark plug hole, and slowly rotate the crank by hand until the piston contacts the dowel. Make a mark on the crank pulley. Rotate the other direction (backwards) until piston again contacts the dowel. Make another mark on the pulley. Half way between the 2 marks is TDC. Now, either get a timing tape for the diameter of your pulley and fab up some kind of pointer, or calculate how far from TDC 10 deg is from TDC using a method similar to this (from another recent post)"Measure the dia of the pulley with reasonable accuracy (+/- 1/8" is fine). Calc. circumference = pi*diameter. Divide that by 36, which will give you the number of inches per 10 deg increment around the pulley. Compare that distance to the timing marks to see what 10 deg corresponds to."

Base timing, with the SPOUT connector out is 10 deg BTDC, but only use that as a guide. Advance timing past 10 deg until you get pinging / you feel the KS pulling timing, and back off a deg or 2.

Jeff K,

A FREE GEOMETRY LESSON! What the hell do you do for a living, teach? [Image: biggrin.gif]

Your description is the dead-reckoning, on-the-money, you-can't-screw-it-up, I-don't-need-no-stinking-timing-light method!
