Timing belt replacement ?

Am I understanding this correctly ? ,,The aux cam gear can be in any position just as long as the rotor will line up with the #1 sparkplug wire on the cap ?
This is my first time changing this belt I noticed the cam gear was pointing to the right mark instead of the center mark when it was at TDC , it was running fine so I dont know if it jumped or if its always been that way the belt looked good about 50,000 miles on it , however I did line it up with the center mark after several times of having something move I finally got them to line up but the aux cam moved a bit , so my ? is can I just turn my dist. to compensate ? Thanks

I would re drop the distributor to the correct position. Moving the distributor to compensate may not give you enough wiring harness slack to set the actual timing when you get it running. The initial lining up of the rotor and the #1 plug terminal only gets you into the ballpark. You still need to set the timing with a timing light, spout out.

A timing belt change is very simple on a 2.3 ford we do app 12 timing belts a week in our shop and like a 3 leter saab is a 10 hour job. And very complicated compaired to a 2.3 ford. Here is a tip we use to make it easier. If the timing belt has not jumped or broke here is a simple trick you can use. Set the timing at TDC ignition phase and mark the gears including the aux shaft with white out. It does not even have to be the factory marks as long as you line them up to the marks you made and the timing will be correct. It is always recommended to retime after a belt change. But if you line up the marks you made the timing will be on the money.
