I'm going though the maintace stuff on my new bird,
replacing the timing belt and tensioner. I have all the marks lined up and when I install the belt it looks like I'm half a tooth off. The belt rests ontop of the teath with the slack in the belt on the tensioner side. I've come across this before and i normaly turn the crank forward slighty.
Is the best setup for this engine, running all stock for the moment with a t3 turbo. I still have the facotry slider cam also.

Run a string from the center of the cam sprocket bolt to the center of the auxiliary shaft sprocket and see if the timing mark on the cam sprocket is lined up with that string. If not, make it line up with it - the rear timing cover could be shifted a little. When I put on a timing belt, I usually turn the cam slightly clockwise from "zero" beforehand.

I checked it this morring, lined up the cam bolt and aux bolt and the timing mark was right on. If I set the crank on TDC with the belt on and adjusted right, the cam points to the first mark on the cover - showing its slightly retarted. This is also the way the old belt was set up. Is it best to leave it like that, or adjust the cam to be slightly advanced (tored the 3rd mark?)
I'm using a dayco belt and tensioner with factory pullies

The string method should be more accurate than using the marks on the cover. There is slop in the cover

It seems as though either your timing cover is misaligned and your crank timing mark is off, or the head and/or block has been milled at some point for flatness. Personally - I would put the belt on the way it was before if it was running well. :dunno:

I strung up some string across the center of the cam and aux pulley bolts and the center mark lines up perfectly on the plastic timing cover. If I line everything up with the marks the ribs on the belt sit on top of the ribs on the pulley. As of right now I left the crank marks lined up and set the cam slightly retarded as shown in the pic......
I can either leave it like this or turn the cam forward and the timing mark lines up on the other mark.
i have know idea how well this engine ran, the turbo was removed because the PO thought it was burning oil.
